I've run into this exact problem as well. Easily reproducable. This only seems to happen when no artifacts are discovered. Once I've discovered an artifact the Research Artifacts tab displays without causing a BSOD. My specs are similar: WinXP SP2 Geforce 7800 running the latest forceware
