Well, i've had my current cpu for four years and I am expecting to have to live with what i get for around the same time. So, Im sure whatever chipset/mobo setup i get, four years down the road it will be a dead socket. Unless, there are some specific socket types that you all think will still be going strong in four years or at least still have chips available for them.
Again, my budget is $300 for CPU, MB, and RAM. I have an AMD 64 3200 socket 939 MB right now. So basically its an old POS that is worthy if the junk heap. That is why I am trying to upgrade and get the best longevity for the money. Again thanks to all who have helped so far! Still open to any more suggestions!
@taco There are no fry's/mircocenters anywhere close at all. The only electronics store I have around is best buy and a few mom and pop stores that are equally expensive as best buy. So, I am pretty much limited to online and the best i've found is newegg, unless anyone knows any other good sites?
@Jafo Considering my wife's position is she gets to spend in cloths whatever I spend on my computer....its really costing me $600 to upgrade. And trust me, if there was any way i could "mislead" on money...I would.

Thanks for the advice so far. I have been doing some more looking myself and it seems the RAM is going to be between $100-110 for 2 x 2GB ddr3 ram no matter what manufacturer. I guess the real struggle is the processor. It pretty much boils down to a dual core with a little better performance (3.0 ghz +) or a quad core around 2.6-2.8ghz. Will more cores make that much of a difference in terms of the longevity of the system or is the speed of the processor a bigger worr
So I am looking to upgrade my 4 year old amd 64 3200 2.0 ghz and MB. I managed to let the wife let me spend around $300. This would be a home build with a friend helping with installation. I currently am playing entrenchment and prefer more single player games then multiplayer. With that said and the supposed improvements to the AI in diplo, to do those they have upgraded have you noticed a difference in the AI when upgrading? If so, has it made the AI smarter/harder to play against?
What is a good number of hoshikos to include based on fleet size? I.E. 1 per 5 ships/10/15 etc?
Well, after playing a few junker games just to learn, I won my first game against normal AI in a little more than 2 hours in a small random map with 1 AI. It was awesome....what a great game!!!
Thanks for the help darvin. I watched your whole game. A few things came to my attention while watching the game. 1. I noticed there were no pirate attacks. I assume you turned them off. Is that just a personal preference or does it help with the overall gameplay? 2. Was there any reasoning behind your settlement pattern? Did you just branch out until you found the enemies main base then focus on expanding towards it? 3.
I am starting at normal. Ok, I can get to where to watch movie's...but i want to watch the one that darvin3 posted. I have it saved on my computer now but its not showing up. I assume I have to save it to a specific folder so I can watch in the game, do you know where i save the file to?

I just purchased sins w/ entrenchment. Where would you suggest I start in terms of map size/opponents vs AI to start learning the game?
I am new to the game as well. How do I view the game replay? Also, how do I make copies of my games? And if I make copies of the games will other fans view them and constructively criticize so I can improve gameplay?
I just started playing my first game of sins + entrenchment today and played the tutorials first as well. However, I just can't help but feel a little lost at times. Especially, with the tech research trees and the ship classes. Are there any strategy articles that go little more in depth into optimal tech paths, fleet makeups, etc. anywhere on this site or on any fan sites?
