Do you have a reason to believe that it's a collective failure? Considering that it happens only to NVidia cards and not ATI, I really doubt this is Microsoft's fault (or StarDock/Ironwhatever's). There's a greater difference between XP and Vista than just the DirectX version. A couple of those regkeys might make the pause a bit less unbearable if you just shorten the timeout, at the risk of other stability things. None will fix the problem.
