If you're serious about programming, you might want to start with C and C++. If you want to have a (very) general idea, or if you want to work on a higher level than most business-level languages, then you can go with a scripting language. If you want one of those three, anyway, I'd recommend Python. It's cleaner, better designed, and it has a greater feature set.
