Yeah, its pretty much what Retro said. Until then it will be sandbox and multiplayer.

What I find is that when the Pirate raiders come it is important to manage the battle and focus in on their light cruisers. I Shift+click to chain a bunch of ships together. That way even if ships start moving around I can hit them later. My first build tree involves 2-3 turrents 3 labs, 1 cap ship factory, 1 cap ship 6-9 light frigs, 2 scouts and 2 colony ships. Usually this goes up within the first 10-15 mins.
Annatar has been around since the beta tests. He should have a lot more. Kryo answers a lot of questions on IRC. No karma button there :P
This game does have tactics. It has been a little while since I played an I am sorry that you are running into noobish players. You guys go into this great detail about your fleets... All I do not even worry about adding ships in! With Advent 3 Halcyon Carriers and 15 Aeria Dron Hosts can kill just about anything with waves of fighters, including the Flacks. I clear Pirate bases with ease using the fleet listed above. Of course my units are all upgraded. I research up pretty quick.

Try setting the AI onto different levels as well. Make one a fortifer, one economics, one research, ect. I never liked

Their cheap supply (disiple vesels) and abilities (1.5 damage per sec in a certain zone with crusadiers) Make them Extreemly powerful. This is probably FAR off, but a targeting system that would let you Target engines, weapons or hull. Hegeonia (sp) did a good job of this.

Research is still not concurrent. X-( It was thrown around durning beta that the release would allow you to do this. It is still impossible to research a military and civilian project at the same time. If you have the money and the labs why can't you research both at once? :p
