I've actually found that my cap ships tend to slow down or get stuck trying to retreat when they turn on the same plane and run into other cap ships or facilities. They actually just shove the smaller ships aside, but if you're trying to get that cap ship out of harm's way quickly, then changing the plane means that it won't run into anything and slow down on the way out.

Do you happen to have a replay of the game in question? There should be an automatic save for it in your multiplayer folder. I'd be interested as well in how this was done.

I get an error when I try to apply the theme, most of it is installed but the dialog box states: -- WindowsBlinds Enhanced found. Check out the planetary defense thread. They talk about structures that are helpful in slowing or mitigating a planetary attack until your home defense fleet gets there. For the lazy, many on the thread espouse the use of 7-8 hangars with a 50/50 or 40/60 mix of bombers to fighters, 2 repair bays placed so that they can heal each other, planetary shield or race equivalent, and then gauss cannons or equivalent to protect hangars/repair bays/planet to round out the defense and fill the
I agree with Legerdemain (liking sleight reference btw) up there and back up Yarlen. Hosting and joining has been pretty painless for me from the beginning and I haven't had to muck about with the port settings. Of course there are the games on there that have the d/c from game server problem when you try to join because of improper setup, but if you have played Warcraft 3 online or WoW before, then your ports should be set up properly already as Sins uses the same port as Battle.net
Didn't want to read the last 500 or so posts (I also wouldn't want to be the person whose job it is to read all of this), but I wanted to suggest a tweak to the UI in case someone had not mentioned this. Could there be an addition to the info screen that pops up on roll-over of the metal and crystal production numbers? Basically, I was wondering if there could be a section beside the planet name in that info screen that tells you how many asteroids have the extractors built into them
