Fight with your fleet visible in the empire tree, then you can easily see what's being attacked and pull out anything that's close to death. Those ships contribute a lot more DPS than it sometimes feels like, so you should definately build them. As far as ratio, that's a debatable question I'll leave to experts. I generally just try to keep my cap ship and fleet supply levels around the same point, build what caps I can and then fill out the rest of the points with frigs and crui

Took me awhile to figure this one out myself until I just started a match and experimented. There is a technology for each race to research that allows jumping between star systems. You will need to research that. Once you do, you can warp to any other star system on your map. Phase lanes aren't involved. The only limitation is that you must be in the actual star's gravity well to make the jump.
Ah thanks. I think it should display lines, maybe a different color for potential links between phase stabilizers.
Actually probably not a bad idea. Though as a substitute, the infocard of a planet will show if it has a phase stabilizer (in bright green text near the bottom) when you mouse over it.

Set your fleet tactics to engage anything in the gravity well and tell them to keep close or medium distance from each other. They will move and engage on their own. Be careful doing that, though, as it could get your fleet killed if you're not paying attention. I imagine even moreso in multiplayer. I've noticed the targeting AI tends to almost fanatically target ships over structures. Sometimes even if it's dropping its attack on a turret to hit a scout or trader.

Every once in awhile, Sins will remind me of Conquest just a little bit. I think it's the similarty in the "star hopping" type campaign feel you get from Phase lanes/Gravity wells (Sins) and Wormholes/Star Systems (Conquest).

So then culture is kind of a you have it or you don't thing? That is to say, rather than having degrees it's either yours is present or theirs is based on proximity of structures and research/race? Or is it just that you don't need a lot of it for defensive purposes? And thanks for the replies and advice. ;) I'm hoping to get some time to get on ICO this weekend and try some multiplayer.

Simplest solution would be to lock teams so they can't. According to the devs, the AI will team up against the empire they consider to be the greatest threat, so you have to be careful if teams aren't locked.

Greetings folks, and hooray for another newbie questions thread. I've had the game for a little under a week now and have played about 4-5 matches vs the AI (My schedule was so hectic, I didn't have time to play more. I've probably actually spent more time browsing these forums from work looking for info than I actually have playing...) Hopefully you guys can answer a few of the questions I still have. I'll probably spend most of my time with SP, but I'd like to ge
The Dunov is the best as the captain has a awesome Canadian accent.
Probably not the most significant reason to choose a capship... Then again, I used to choose Admiral Hawkes in Conquest: Frontier Wars just to hear him say "Well now, look who's coming to dinner!" in that proper-like English accent whenever enemy ships entered the system. Well, that and he was good with missile cruisers which were wtfawesome in the early game.
