The 1.1 patch is available only through Impulse.
I also read that somewhere. I hope someone gets around to posting it on the internet as soon as it comes out. I didn't see anything wrong with the old system of entering my serial and then having access to the update. I wouldn't think Impulse would make it any more secure: people with a valid serial who purchased the game get patches and updates; people who got it illegally don't. I will not be downloading Impul

I mean, right-clicking on an enemy ship will have on of your ships (or a fleet) pursue it... it's not automatic, but it's not 'micro' by any means. I believe they will follow the enemy ships through phase jumps, but I don't quite remember.

Obviously, you won't be able to play online, but you should be able to find patches elsewhere on the internet. And I seriously hope people will continue to put patches on the internet or on file sharing when 1.1 comes out only for Impulse, because I REFUSE to download any application of that sort.

Actually, I think I know why this occurred. When you have a huge fleet that includes many close combat, long range, and support vessels, both normal and cap ships, you can see that the formation is not only wide but also very long. If group jumping is enabled, they will maintain their formation as they prepare to jump. The rear ships in the fleet--usually the support vessels, like your Drone Hosts--will be able to jump from inside the gravity well. This could make jumps from next to

Stars are a little small. But the thing that always gets me is that first shot a battleship fires at a second target after the a first is fired. No matter how oblique the angle, no matter how straight the beam-shooters seem to be pointed, the lasers always seem to hit their target.

Stardock has the most liberal approach to copy protection of any software or game company. Introversion, an indie developer, has a pretty good system (a lack thereof) but it's so generous that I'd say 80% of the people playing their games got them illegally.

Duddde... I mean, if you really want an ATI, go for it, but I've always been partial to NVIDIAs. It's a lot easier to work with their forceware. Obviously, a lot depends on your specific model, but from personal experience, I've seen a 64MB NVIDIA FX 5200 give a 256MB ATI x600 a run for its money in terms of framerate and performance.

Bombers are the best way of killing HCs short of throwing MORE HC's at them, or sending in capships. I've had planets with 2 fighter squadrons and 4 bomber squadrons (along with turrets) defend themselves quite capably against HC assaults for some time, until support arrives.

No problem. Another idea: since you've got an XPS, you probably have more than one graphics card slot--you may want to look into SLI technology. That's a pretty cost-effective way of increasing your graphics performance. I can help out with that because I set up SLI on my XPS laptop. You should check and see whether your current card is SLI-compatible--if it is, you could probably save money by ordering a duplicate card and connecting them through an SLI bridge. You could increase performance in

Quick question: it seems, both from the unit descriptions and this post, that neither fighters or bombers are really effective against line-of-battle frigates (the cobalt, etc.). Which one is better against them? I know fighters have a sizeable damage reduction against them, but I think I read somewhere that bombers don't do full damage vs. them either.
If the teams are locked Im pretty sure its a victory if all hostiles are destroyed but if its not locked (or maybe a difficulty setting dunno) then the AI will declare war on someone (including you, even at 100% friendly with all alliance stuff) until someone wins.
I don't think that is correct. I've played with unlocked teams many times and won with an AI ally who hasn't 'turned' on me. There can be more than one victor in a heliopolitical sense--that is, I suppose everyone o

Alt-Tab has always been shaky when running an application any more complex than Office or IE. My solution? I just make sure everything is closed and that all pop-up notifications are disabled when I'm playing a game, and do my best to never have to use Alt-Tab.

I have 2x8800M 512 MB GTX in SLI--the best mobile GPU on the market--and I can run any game with no framerate dropping below 40 on maxed-out settings. Since you have a Dell, I'd recommend ordering your new parts from them. You can get a pretty good deal, they're fully backed with a warranty, and, if you consult with a specialist who has detailed information on your system configuration, compatibility is guaranteed.

I haven't noticed this with Sins because I'm playing on a beast of a computer, but in nearly every other 4X game, it runs slower the further you are into it. Especially Civilization and GalCiv II. Normally, you don't really notice because the performance drop is gradual as the game proceeds (as the CPU and RAM become more taxed with more units, cities, etc.), but it's really apparent when you load a saved game (vs. starting a new game). You jump right in and it takes a full minute to compute the

For a host of useful network information, open up your DOS command prompt, either by Start-->Run-->cmd or Start-->Accessories-->Command Prompt, and enter in 'ipcomfig.' It'll have your IP address, your subnet mask, your ISP's DNS suffix, and default gateway. This is especially important given that sometimes Windows' built-in network tools display innaccurate information about your IP address. Although I just tried Phazon's method and it matches my ipconfig.

I never build them--my research is always more oriented towards the economy and improving my combat ships. But I think if you could select one, you could assign it to a Control Group--for example, Ctl-7. I know you can assign things like strike craft and civilian ships to control groups, and I'm pretty sure static defenses as well, so there should be no reason why you can't do the same for a Super.

I once went for 6 1/2 hours on a LAN, me and one other human on a custom 4-star map with a bunch of computer players. It was interesting to see how the long-term game played out: remarkably similar to Civilization. A couple CPU's got killed early on, a couple lasted longer, a few created respectable 7-10 planet enclaves, and me, my friend, and two Advent CPU's controlled huge chunks of the galaxy. The end result? Stalemate, and 2 AM rolled around. Neither of us noticed an option to sav

Sins of a Solar Empire is an amazing-looking game with the graphics maxed out, but this can be taxing on even newer GPUs. The following is a guide I've made to help those who use NVIDIA's SLI (Scalable Link Interface) technology. SLI is a feature which allows the rendering of a game or other 3D application by two (or more, but two is pretty standard for now) matching NVIDIA SLI-enabled Graphics Processing Units. While this does not double the user's overall video card RAM (i.e., 2x256
