I also have to question why SoaSL places an entry into the Windows startup sequence to start automatically on system boot o_O

It's not SINS_Launcher.exe. This is the one that appears by going through the Start menu. and [i]says[/i] it's "Sins of a Solar Empire". It's not, though, it's linked to SINS_Launcher, which appears to do nothing but create a taskbar button and that's it (game doesn't launch). To run the game I too had to eject then reinsert the DVD. Finally I used Windows Explorer instead. In "Program Files/Stardock Games/Sins of a Solar Empire" its correctly listed as "Sins of a Solar Empire.exe". On
Don't rely solely on Gamespot or a few reviewers when looking for new games. The place to go is:[link="http://www.metacritic.com/games/pc/"]Metacritic[/link]. It's reviews from many critics and also User's rating score (for what it's worth). This is the first place I go to look for a new game.
