try putting it in c:\users\username\appdata\local\ironclad games\sins of a solar empire\galaxy this is for vista i cant remember the folder for xp. but some of the maps i got gave me the auto lose then when i moved them to another folder they worked.
i would have to say its completely situational. If your credit income rate is kinda low go with another trade port but if you need minerals build a refinery. Personaly i only put refineries in systems where they would be next to multiple gravwells because i read refineries only work in the gravwell they are in and up to 1 gravwell away. If im wrong about refineries someone please tell me :)
i downloaded the map Realspace. I have windoze Vista. I unzipped it. Icopied it to the galaxy folder in c:\progam files(x86)\stardock games\sins of a solar empire\galaxy. Once that was done i opened the file realspace.galaxy with notepad and changed the version number from 0 to 1. i then launched Sins. The map was nowhere to be found not even in custom maps location. I closed Sins and thought wtf and looked in explorer and i found another directory for sins stuff. So i cut it from that directory
use your colony frigate if you are tec or advent if you play vasari your scout ship is what you will need to capture the neutral mineral extractors.
