For asteroids I tend to mainly use turrets. However, I still think you should have 1 or two hangers w/ fighters in them. Asteroids are small enough that each turret can cross the other turret's arcs. It makes for pretty good defense. For planets, I mainly use hangers, with a couple of turrets located where my trade ports/refineries are.
