I've had this problem with my computer too, I am only able to play one game at a time before the game freezes.

I haven't tried the game with the planet quality bonus but I've noticed that if you have the luck attribute then, in later game, around when every civ is pretty well established luck will come into play and your people will find Ranger Class ships and they'll be put to use. After several playthroughs with luck I've noticed luck doesn't really help to much.
