Right now I plan to buy and install the commercial release of Vista Ultimate as soon as I am allowed. I am not happy with the price and licensing. My computer is middle of the line--two years ago--3.7 Windows Experience Index. I don't like that if I buy Vista now, it means I am also committing to staying with this computer for a while to get my "money's worth" on a new OS. Not to mention the additional several hundred dollars that will be charged for the Expressions products, which I

There are two main steps in making a bootskin. Creating the background and progress bar images correctly is the first step. They must be 4-bit depth bitmaps of specific size. The tutorials Bichur linked are great for learning what this means. The second step is creating the bootskin.ini file and packaging the bootskin. If you have the correct format images, you can use Bootskin Buddy to finish. BB will create your bootskin package for you, and warn you of errors.<b

If I understand correctly, I think I have one solution that doesn't require scripting. Create another new object, make it a shortcut, and set all its stuff. Give it a name, like "MyShortcut". You can set Visible to No on the relations tab to hide this shortcut, if you don't want it visible. Now, on the object you have as a controller, I assume you mean that you have already chosen "Start With: Mouse over" as your option on the Relations tab. We can still add some basic behav

I'm pretty sure Firefox interrupts the normal minimize procedure to perform some special management when it is minimized. For example, if you go to your Sounds control panel, and set a sound to play when a window is minimized, this sound will not be played when you minimize Firefox. Windows, and presumably any other application listening for minimizations are not getting the messages because Firefox doesn't let them through--it handles this on its own, so to speak. This is s

Expression Blend, previously known as "Sparkle" and "Expression Interactive Designer" has just been released as a Beta. This application is used for creating applications with Windows Presentation Foundation. Vista users can get the app and try it out now! XP users can too, but will need some extra downloads, listed in the requirements. http://www.microsoft.com/products/expression/en/expression-blend/default.mspx

DesktopX handles a lot of stuff for widget creators, but decisions on what will be displayed upon load are pretty much up to the widget author. DX will remember where you last had an object pretty well, but does not necessarily retain other settings, such as size or visibility. Some of these can be set in script, on panels, or simply by their state upon export from the Builder. So, long story short, these widgets show up like that by design. Luckily, DX is all about changing t

Hey RR, stats pages use to refresh once a day, but are now a live count as the My Skins pages are. i dont think thats right b/c my actual downloads vs. my unique downloads is several thousands apart. My download # vs. stat

First, try loading up the widget so it appears to be running, then hit F10 a few times. And if that doesn't work... Here's something else you can try. Open DesktopX Builder to an empty desktop, and import the Live Weather II widget. From the Desktoptab of the Settings Panel, or by right clicking icon in systray, you can get an object list. On that list find the object with ObjectID "grp_smallweatherBase" Check in the X and Y columns of the O

It is also possible that one page has access to more recent numbers when calculating the number to show. The numbers for an individual skin can vary from the info pane, to the my skins, to the gallery, to the download details link. If each of these access numbers that are updated on different schedules, for example, it would explain temporary discrepancies with overall average agreement.

Every skin has a link where it mentions how many downloads it has, on a More Details or View Comments page and elsewhere. If you click this you can get some download information for the particular skin. The numbers usually reflect actual unique downloads, which makes sense. But total downloads, including repeats, are also tracked. It's possible that the number on the Stats page reflects the sum total downloads, while the number on My Skins page reflects sum unique downloads

I have to "furiously" mouse over a magnifying ObjectDock to get a noticable spike in CPU. But I say, Big Deal! That's what it is there for. Wanting smooth, quick, interesting animations rendered on the fly, but for some reason not wanting to use any processing power to do it makes little sense. I say, give me all you got for that second or two I'm interacting with the dock and selecting an icon. When I stop furiously mousing over a dock, the CPU immediately drops. So Object

Other tips for Flip3D! Quick-Launch shortcuts get automatic hotkeys, WindowsKey+{Number}. There is a "Switch between windows" quick launch, and it typically defaults to WindowsKey+2 (or you can just click on the shortcut). WindowsKey+2 also locks the Flip3D on until a choice is made. You can also get the locked Flip3D by adding Control to the standard Window-Tab. So, WindowsKey+2 and WindowsKey+Control+Tab bring up Flip3d a

There are a number of ways, and the one you choose will depend on the exact look you want and your particular graphics app's tools. I think the effect you are looking for is usually called a "texture". Search your app's documentation for "texture" and see if they are supported. Most apps come with default textures, such as the diagonal hash lines, and also let you define your own.

Have you tried any other meter types, such as Hard Drive space or CPU use? The Windows Scripting Host can become corrupt, as can the WMI. But the symptoms could also be due to a bad DesktopX install that didn't get the plug-ins straight somehow. Do any of the Blister Pack DX meters work properly?

I'm sorry you dislike the label "objectivist", Draginol, but in any case I used it in reference to the philosophy of Ayn Rand, not to you, and its use was apt. You claim you have nowhere suggested you are an objectivist after opening your piece by calling Atlas Shrugged a "classic book". Your entire defense against Zuckerman is based on your summation of the philosophy, "...government doesn't make wealth, people do." The article starts out praising the Bible of objectivism, mak

I like Audacity very much. I have used it to create small sound effects for use in widgets and as system sounds, but also to create new and complex sound effects for the local community theater (my thunderstorms are always a big hit!). It is extensible, too, so there are many handy plug-ins available to help you get things done. Audacity is one of my favorite open source apps.

The objectivist philosophy of Ayn Rand being applied to economic policy has been proven a mistake in theory and in practice. Even when it is correctly interpreted. In fact, the rest of this post reads as if Draginol was basing his economic opinions on the Vonnegut short story "Harrison Bergeron" http://instruct.westvalley.edu/lafave/hb.html more than Rand's social Darwinist tome. The assertion is made that the only possible result of trying
