Graphics, the fact that it's RTS, it still has research and some amount of customization in ship choices and such makes Sins a lot better, but SotS used to be like my favorite game at one point so it's still fine.

In one game, where i first figured out how to uncover artifacts, I(not knowing how to get artifacts on my own worlds) invaded an enemy world for the sole purpose of it's artifact, then i'm like... explore... of course! and i set all my worlds to explore 100% and found an artifact and "spice trade" :V
I actually found dealing with pirates fairly easy in my second game, only had any trouble in my first in which i was just screwing around.
There are green stars in the game, yes.
Now* that i've researched defense hangars.
I'm thinking it'll run good, though that is honestly a guess because I don't actually have the game.

I was hoping that, when you said roleplaying, you meant actually roleplaying the races. For instance not just going to war for no reason, but because they sent their ships into something you regard as 'sacred ground' or something.
