Ok, connected directly to the modem and it works. I still get the error message when hosting, but it works. I don't know why, I don't know how, I don't care, I'm so tired and don't even feel like playing anymore... Aaaaargh! P.S. Thank you everyone for your help and concern.

No special software running, I've never really played other RTS's online, but I have hosted Diablo 2 games through direct ip connect.
Firewall is off. 6112 being forwarded. Nothing. Ow.
My modem is an Arris TM502G. No, not working when connected directly to the modem, either. My head hurts...
No on the 'both' setting or DMZ mode. Moving my computer to the modem now... X-(
I disabled my firewall, no cigar. :SNIFF!:
I went into the router settings (by typing the ip address into internet explorer) then I went to the gaming and applications tab and the port forwarding tab. I forwarded 6112 to my desktop's ip and also tried using the range 6000-6112 just to be safe. I still get that error message before hosting a game. P.S. I'm just really frustrated right now, but don't let that fool you; I love Stardock and their excellent support.
I've tried opening ports as well, as per the suggestions in the faq. Unfortunately, the router setting prompts me to add an application name, so I have no idea what to input.
I had really high hopes for this game, I still think its very well done. Unfortunately, the multiplayer support is abysmal. I've been unable to join or host any game and I've stared at my router settings longer than I would normally consider healthy. I'm spent.
Thank you, wish me luck!
How might I do this 'port forwarding'?
How does one do that, exactly?
Me and my friend both bought this game earlier today and we were both very excited to play. Unfortunately, after completing the tutorials and entering the multiplayer lobby, we realized that without reconfiguring our routers or tweaking other settings, we would not be able to host games. What gives? I payed for this game and I expect to be able to play without reading a thick tech manual or messing around with my network setup. This is a really disappointing issue.
I agree with the dual monitor support and would love to have it, but I understand that the dev team has bigger things to work on (as they should!). The screen-within-a-screen sounds nice, though. I would really love to have a strategic map up with a little screen inside zoomed in on an exciting battle. You guys should consider this, though; the ability to have multiple views going on at the same time on different monitors (or even the same one) could give people with better hardwar
I don't think GC2 and SotSE have similar enough visual styles to import ships from one to the other.
Stardock has always been excellent at updating a game after its release. There's a good chance that if demand is high enough, we may see a ship design feature in future add-ons. A 3D modeling program is not what I'm talking about at all. What I'm referring to is the sort of mechanic that was in Galactic Civilizations 2 (another excellent stardock game), albeit outside of the actual RTS game experience. The only problem I can see in integrating a thing like this is the possible advantag
I completely agree with the Devs on excluding the ship designer feature from this game. It would have no place in a fast-paced RTS. However, why not have an out-of-game designer application? Players could use the feature to create their own designs (a la GC2) and save them for use in the game itself. I think it could add quite the extra dimension to the core strategy. Perhaps this idea could be realized in a future update? P.S. Cheers to the team for making such a great game, I'
