Maybe from the black market you should be able to buy upgrades for ships. They would like from the tech tree but they instant but expensive.

Its a great game, I really suggest getting it. Never gets old.

I just thought of something, lets say your capital ships was moments away from being destroyed, why not just scuttle it and get resources and deny your enenmy of experiance?
