Getting that free cap ship at start is a must. On small maps its probably better to get the best combat version of a cap ship for your race, as you will encounter the enemy quickly. On medium/large maps I prefer the cap ships that can colonize planets like the Vasari Giant Egg. I prefer medium/large maps, so I usually scrap my capital ship yard right after my first cap pops out. Its gives me a small return on resources very useful early in the game. I wont be building a second

Good job, this is as close to a build order as I think you can get with Sins. Theres a LOT more variation in play styles and strategy then say, Starcraft where everyone plays only BGH or Lost Temple. One question I never see strats try to answer...what happens if you DONT get the first 200 crystal bid?
Not sure I understand the problem. You can join games, but when the host leaves you disconnect as well? Are sure its the host losing connection and not you losing connection with the host? Can you host games yourself? You might need to forward something like ports 6000-6020 to be able to host, I have a similar router and needed to do that. Might need to do forum search for the exact port range.
Vasari/TEC 2v2 teams are great for just that reason. Go for early trade stations while nabbing some real-estate, then the vasari techs to dark fleet using TEC funding. On medium maps where there might be quick military engagements, the vasari can get their LRM equivalent pretty easily and spam a few dozen of those for mobile defense before teching to Dark Fleet. My freind and I are 5-0 using this basic strat (not giving away trade secrets), and its worked pretty well.
After a few games of not being able to complete impossible missions and gang-banging by comps I went to locked teams...much better. I play MP now so its not really an issue anymore for me.
LRMs might possibly be unbalanced, just not as severely as some people would have you think.. Don't forget the game is only like two weeks old and Stardock I don't think is quite ready to start nerfing things yet. Your first problem I think was scouting. Most maps I have played on 2-3 scout ships set on auto-explore can tell me all I need to know about the surrounding planets and phase lanes to determine what planets and asteroids I need to snatch for map control/resources. They can
The domination idea is good. Make it an adjustable game option, so you can host a game called "2v2 DOM 80%!!!" You don't lose any of Sins normal gameplay but you do encourage expansion and combat to nab as much land, or take away your opponents, as possible. Also making it an adjustable value lets people change the % depending on the map size. 70% is too much if your dealing with some 5-star super small map where 80% might be better. Wouldn't require any major balancing issues
What the others have said. Split that fleet up. Heavy defenses only need a handful of ships to put a stop to most attacks.
