I'm embarrassed to say that I've never relied heavily on carriers before. I don't play Sins all that often (I'm at college, and I have a mac here, so I can't play it), but in the TEC game I have saved at home, I recently started using percherons. How important should those be to my fleet? Yeah, they jump stars, that's true. Regarding your second question: in my experience, no, they don't mass from different pirate bases. I -think- they'll deploy from the pirate base closest to the raid target, but I'm not certain. I'm pretty sure they don't come from multiple bases in a single raid, though.

Driving enemy fleets into traps tends to work, but if the enemy does something unconventional, or if you get caught overextending your supply lines, then the AI WILL take advantage of your folly, if they have the resources.
