I have not had these issues myself *knock on wood* but I know that at start up I let the game "decide" my visual settings for me (or are they already set at certain values out of the box?). Just for reference sake, I'm running a Quad core (2.4ghz), NVIDIA GeForce 8500 GT and 3gb of ddr2 ram...

Just the kind of thread I was looking for. I'm not much of a strategy gamer, so these tips are helpful. Thank you for the tips/strategies. :)
