How about a research option that would allow one to create a Planetary Gateway that would provide instant fleet transportation between your Capitol planet and a second planet you own that is located anywhere on the map.? I would really like a 3D space map. This would greatly increase the choices one would have for invasion and chokepoints. Also, it would be nice to have curved routes in addition to the straight lines. Having Planetary systems with orbits, offering choices such as gravitaional slingshots, waiting for planetary alignments....In other words, modeling the galaxies more the way they really are, not just a 2D linear model...
