I would imagine most ships were advanced enough to have full reaction control systems on them. Using their attitude jets to slow/correct their movement when needed. It would probably make a mess of things when push comes to shove, lots of unnecessary physics calculations and would make a phase jump nie impossible due to the constant movement.
