I was under the impression that rebellion was just an expansion. (lost my old sins copy and got a new computer)

I was one of the first people to buy sins back in 2008 and played constantly for about a year. Things happened, and i ended up stopinh playing. This was my favorite RTS's. Long story short how many people play online now a days and is it worth $60 dollars in order to get back into this franchise. I'd like to consider myself a good econ and frontline player (although I heard they nerfed illuminators/LRMs/assailants.) is that true? All and all i have come back to this game af
