Agreed, I should have left out that bit about cheaters. Also, I wanted to say I don't appreciate some of the nasty comments about competitive players. I have at times been in both groups, playing casually and competitively. And I don't think posters are being honest why they say things like they have nothing against competitive players, then post: "go be competitive and make your mommy proud". Not only are they being dishonest, they are being rude as well. It's all well and good

One more thing, I am a bit surprised that people are saying only RTS games have a competitive vs casual gamer problem. Have you guys tried playing in competitive games in other genres? The competition, cheating, and hacks there can be intense. "Even with the use of anti-cheat software, the FPS games are notorious for having the most cheats, which can sometimes turn people away from that type of game. This may be due in part because both clients and servers are run on private systems i
I think some people are being a bit unfair about multiplayer RTS. It's true that multiplayer has a different feel than single player. But I don't think that game developers ruin the single player by trying to make play balancing or abuse fixing multiplayer related tweaks. Nor do I think the game is nothing but a clickfest. And about some of the rushing vs turtling/teching comments. I think it is too simplistic to say something like "rushing is boring". That kind of reasoning is almost
Myth was not a RTS (Real Time Strategy). It was a RTT (Real time Tactical). It sounds like you don't like RTS at all, but instead prefer RTT. Not all game developers label their game as RTT, instead mention RTS, but try to mention their game is different from a traditional RTS: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Real-time_tactics If you are into RTT, you might want to check out World In Conflict. No resource management, just real
Others have mentioned the Marza. I can't emphasize that enough. Missle barrage has been so effective in the latest patches that I started using Marza's almost exclusively. In my latest game, all of my cap ships are Marza's, except for 1 Akkan in each fleet for colonizing and ion bolt, and 1 sova for strike craft support(it's fun seeing the enemy destroy all 6 of your bomber squads, only to have Rapid Manufacture instantly rebuilt them). I actually started having a new problem, the enemy fleet
That's not a very nice post Finnek. First off, you acquired the game illegally, you should not be complaining about your lack of support. Second, Stardock is one of the most pro-gamer companies out their. Google "Gamer's bill of rights" if you don't believe me. As for buying no other game in the future, I would recommend you read the EULA before you try to do something like that again.
My thoughts: HOMM2 - good, but was kind of hard. Especially the mission where you have to kill all the dwarfs, ick. Graphics are a bit dated at this point. HOMM3 - My favorite. The best of the series IMHO. I also liked the expantion pack Shadow Of Death. HOMM4 - Nice graphics, horrendous AI. It feels almost like there is no AI and you are just fighting random creatures on the map. Hard to imagine that they actually made the AI worse, it was so good in 2 and 3!! HO
Cooley did you solve your slow down problem? BTW, you can have over 4GB of ram if you have a 64bit platform, which his post says he does. 8GB seems excessive to me though, I would think 4GB should be more than enough.
AA is off(at least in the game settings). 0 other apps running. Dual Channel Ram, OS HD is an ultra high performance I-Ram drive, game itself installed on a raptor HD. My video driver was about 6 months old. I tried upgrading to the latest version but it did not help. I suppose I could check to see if there are any updates for the sound and motherboard drivers. I'll try tweaking the settings in the NVidia driver as well, perhaps I have the settings in the driver too high. Thanks for the tips.
Hunter, if you managed to get this game running decent on large maps, 9x hard AIs, late game, I'd like to know what your secret is. Mine is chugin' at less than 60 planets and a little over 3 hours in. I have all of the detail at lowest level and turned off all effects and it still chugs. I'm not even talking about watching battles, just trying to scroll the map zoomed out and it chugs. My system specs are similar to yours, cept your video cards are better: 3.00Ghz Core 2 Duo 4 GB i
1. Single player campaign. I would prefer it if each campaign was a start to finish storyline. I don't like how in warcraft3/starcraft no matter which race's campaign you pick, they all lead to the same end. I hate that. I would like to take my race all the way from nothing to galactic domination, not the lead in to the next race's campaign. 2. A victory cinematic. After playing all that time I deserve more than a dialog box. 3. Support for multiple CPUs/less chugging with large maps. I
A few comments on this article: http://www.sirlin.net/Features/feature_PlayToWinPart1.htm I agree with alot of what was written there. But I lean more towards FrogBoy's comments. The article seems to dismiss the entire "fun" idea as a crutch of the scrub. But I think the "win at any cost" crowd would be best paired with another "win at any cost" player. And the "I just want to have some fun" crowd should be paired with another "I just want to have some fun" player. It is often not much
I've only been playing tec thus far, but I prefer to pick up a kol battleship and a colonizer frigate as my first choices. Why waste your precious free cap ship on a colonizer when a cheap frigate will do the same job? I prefer a cap ship with an ability to punch a hole in an enemy fleet, instead of one who's ability sits impotently idle until the battle is over.
[quote]It is possible to turn the auto-attack option of your fleet to false. That way, they won't attack the enemies scouts. This helps in two ways: You can leave your fleet at the repair station(s), and you won't lose any hard-won reputation with that AI player if you destroy the scout. Also, research PSIDAR (or its non-TEC equivalent), to know when an enemy fleet is approaching your planets. That way, if its just a scout, you can always turn off auto attack. If its a large enemy fleet, just tur
I just started playing this game. I like it so far, but in my opinion that scouts should not be given the same level of attention as an enemy fleet. I am in the middle of a battle and receive word that allies are joining the fight. No, actually they are not. They just warped to one of my quiet systems where an enemy scout is passing through. Next I have my fleet repairing after the battle. But then my entire fleet leaves the repair station to chase down 1 enemy scout. I like the idea of sco
