I recieved this error by upgrading original SOASE from 1.05 to 1.12. Will several of the steps you mentioned here and post back to let you know how it worked. Sound drivers up to date, display drivers 1 version behind since the new driver was from march. If that doesnt work I will attempt uninstall/reinstall from disk (1.00) then Impulse upgrade to 1.16. Full uninstall reinstall did not work. I uninstalled again then deleted old files left behind manually then reinstall
