Off the top of my head, I'd say that the biggest besides balance is that the only way an AI can defeat a human is with resource advantages. The game is set up right now that the AI throws units at you and you destroy them. So the only way the AI can compete is by replacing the units you destroy, that can only be done with unfair resource advantages. So for one, the game needs to be made much less tanky.

EDIT: The fact is if you don't do stupid things when defining ints, almost all x86 code will compile to 64bits without any modification at all.

Vasari has zero chance of defeating me if I'm playing TEC loyalist because they have no antistructure units, and bombers don't do even a tenth of the damage. EDIT: I personally think antistructure units should be removed and bombers should be beefed up. It would help balance a lot. My opinion just in case sins 2 really is being considered. Yes, I would love to see a Sins 2. I just don't want to see it so tanky as the current sins. Like in Rebellion a TEC Loyalist with side by side dual starbases, three Dunovs, and five repair platforms can tank a maxed out fleet. But then 15 antistructure units by themselves can wipe out both of them in seconds. There are some very serious balance issues in this game right now. And then the scale of the graphics is waaay off. Oh , OK. I know it's a really negative post, but like the first line said, I just needed to get my 2 cents worth in. I did some googling and found a way to disable antistructure units. Question is now about balance, Vasari bomber that fill that role, but do TEC and Advent bombers? There doesn't appear to be any good fix.
I can't beat Advent or TEC on Vicious, and every single freaking it's the Anti-structure units. I have beaten both on Cruel a few times when I heavily micromanaged destroying enemy antistructure units. You literally have to ignore everything else to target those ships first and it takes the whole fleet to do it. It's not possible to split your fleet between worlds and defeat antistructure units before they destroy everything. I hate them. I really truly hate them. They ru
I know it's a common complaint, but I -need- to put my 2 cents in.... They SUCK. They ruin the game. After spending hours building up a gravity well, 15 antistructure units can destroy everything in it within seconds. Long before s fleet from the next gravity well can get there, it's all gone. I fucking hate them. I truly hate them from the bottom of my gut. I hate them so much they make me feel ill everytime I decide to play against a TEC or Advent AI.
