Single Player AI Difficulty level help for a new user in Sins of a Solar Empire Sins Forums

It seems to me that that the AI difficulty levels are kind of screwy in this game? I just bought it, started playing. I murder the AI on normal - So I tried hard. But on Hard (not unfair) the AI slaughters me with what seems like endless waves of ships I just cant match becasue I dont have the resources to keep up.
