"but there is a reason it's popular with this genre." The genre being RTS? Demigod isn't an RTS. The difference being in DG you are supposed to have more players. "I only need to point to this games closest sibling, Supreme Commander, to rule out that whole line of thinking." Bad analogy, people don't play SupCom any higher than 3 vs 3. I'm not arguing that P2P is always a no-go, only that it is a terrible idea for a game supposed
GnomeChomp
You are doing game designing at college, why does that not surprise me?
"Gnomechomp, please make sure you never buy anything I work on ever again. Seriously. " Don't worry, I already made that decision roughly April 09. "People with slower internet connecttions REGARDLESS of how great the netcode is aren't going to be able to play these games." Again totally missing the point. Its not whether people with poor connections can play the game well or not, its whether their poor connections are breaking the game for othe
If I'm playing a game which is lagging because of another player's connection that is the developer's poor design choice, end of story. Can't keep blaming the players when most players aren't at fault. And if the netcode in this game is so great all of a sudden, why isn't everybody playing 5 vs 5s? Everyone is still ducking this question.
"Sorry this game already is great. It may not be the new starcraft but it is within the top 5 best selling games of the year. GPG is one of the best developers ever in getting the game right from the start and same with stardock. How many people play competatively anymore?" LOL whatever.
Lets not forget things like vote kick, remake, reconnect etc
How about making 5 vs 5 work properly so we can start using those maps?
Three main reasons why game will never be great: 1) Peer 2 Peer - means games with over 6 players are likely to lag. 10 players games are practically non-existant despite game being advertised as such. Also makes it hard to introduce features for competitive gaming e.g. vote kicking, remake options, reconnect after drop, accurate recording of stats, prevention of rage quitters joining other games until the first game finishes etc. 2) Publisher that cares about the
The dumb thing is, you don't even need to play that many games to be proficient at Demigod. Its not like HoN or DotA where there are around 50 characters to learn and loads of intracacies in the game. Demigod games pretty much always involve the same 3 characters (UB, Reg, Ereb) with the same items and favour items with a few variations on builds. A decent player just starting DG could easily reach the top-tier within 50 games.
"No, that has nothing to do with the network model. This is an issue of data synchronisation and thus happens in RTS games that use client-server as well as in games that use peer-to-peer." Has everything to do with the network model. Just look at the games I listed for evidence.
"The synchronized simulation is causing "lag" as in "stutter" or "halt" if a datapacket between on of the players is delayed for too long. The same thing would happen in a server-client setup." The difference being, in a client/server, it only affects the player with the bad connection, in p2p it affects everyone. Bit of a drama when you have 10 players and you are getting punished with lag cos of someone else's crap connection. <em
This is a post from Frogboy back in April: "In Demigod, it is peer-to-peer. This was necessary because it needed to have the least amount of latency possible since your moves are directly sent to the other players rather than to a server first. Because the action in Demigod focuses a great deal on Melee in the third person (i.e. players can see their hits) a lot of traditional methods to mask latency aren't possible. Peer-to-peer reduces the problem of "lag"."
"The synchronized simulation is the anti-cheat system. It's not a lazy dev's answer... such a system is quite complex." It is the lazy devs answer if the synchronized simulation is creating a huge problem in itself... lag. "You still don't understand. It doesn't matter how low your latency is. The game would still stutter if no netlag is used in the system. The default value of 350 ms is arbitrarily set, so that many people around the world can play with each othe
"The Moho Engine runs a synchronized simulation. Meaning every client calculates everything and the calculation results are compared with each player directly. This makes cheating without exploiting bugs in the system virtually impossible. If someone tries to force a cheat on to the system, results will mismatch and the game will desynchronize (this of course can be exploited to avoid losses, but that's another story)." That's a lazy dev's answer. If cheating is going t
Nope, I'm saying we were told the justification for Demigod using peer to peer was because there was less latency than client/server in order to make split-second actions. Introducing simulated lag just shows thats BS.
Right, and what does that prove?
Right, so Starcraft and Warcraft have it, so every RTS must have it? And again, don't really see how that is relevant.
Demon Assassin isn't competitive? Demigod isn't competitive either, so seems like a moot point to me.
"Every RTS has an artificial lag built in. StarCraft has 250 ms in Battle.Net for example (100 ms in LAN). This is made to provide fluent gameplay." 1. Every RTS has built in lag. Are you certain of that? 2. Not really sure how that is relevant, anyway. Can we never hear the argument "Demigod uses peer to peer because it requires split second timing" again?
Just to clarify: Any ping under 350 is perfectly acceptable as the game has built in simulated-LAG for this amount. Any SIM Speed over 1 is perfectly acceptable, as your SIM Speed is the number of times faster you're capable of running the game at that moment - SIM Speed of 5 means you can run the game 5 times faster than it is currently running. This is a residual feature from the Supreme Commander engine.
<p
Anyway, back to the point, P2P sucks.
The only point it gets accross is you're a fuckwit who thinks stealing other peoples' material is funny.
Yeah, thats was funny, and original.
Quoting GnomeChomp, reply 47"Than why are you still here? Shoo fly go away." I paid my money, I'll hang around if I want to. Than stay out of parts of the forum that is about the game if you stopped playing it.
In real life I've commanded troops in a warzone. The idea that I would listen to instructions from an internet dweeb like you is pretty laughable.
Demigod now has a remake option?
