It's more like Gears of War mixed with a shmup, but I agree, it's so much fun. If they made a sequel where they replaced the Gears influences with Painkiller and added deathmatch it would be the best thing ever, though.

Technically it's an RTS, but the castle building in it is as involved as any city builder and it's really, really fun. And since it was mentioned, forget Evil Genius. The traps in that game are fantastic but the rest of it is just a crappier Dungeon Keeper. Looks interesting, but what is the main focus of the game, building or combat? Alright, this is going to sound bad, but what you're missing is the expansion. I've never just played the vanilla game, but the expansion adds in a sins-esque sidebar that really helps alleviate the interface issues. Honestly, 90% of the things I do in this game are through the sidebar, and I can't imagine this game being anything but a hassle without it. The rest of the things you hated were pretty spot on, like the poor graphics and the ui and game being really obtuse in places. Tho

Okay, I bought this on sale a while back and have been letting it marinate in patches while I play other things. Could someone let me know what its gimmick is? I mean, GalCiv focuses on empire building, Sword of the Stars revolves around tactical combat, while Space Empires was content to toss in every cool thing about space it could think of about space and call it good. All I really know about Star Ruler is that it lets you build ships the size of galaxies. What else does it do?

Never played it, but from what I've heard it's GalCiv with bad tactical combat. You could try Distant Worlds, it's really been scratching the 4X empire building itch for me. Kind of hard to describe though, it's kind of like a good version of MOO3 with some Space Rangers thrown in.

Yeah, the battles really are entertaining enough that you completely stop noticing the bad graphics after a while. The maps are what you'll notice since you're staring at them 95% of the time, fortunately there's a lot of good ones out there . Sombre's especially. There's also a few interface mods, pretty sure this was the one I used.</a
