You can zoom out and TP to the right building in an instant. Not scroll, but zoom - it's much faster.
NETWORKING IS COMPLICATED.
1) No, it's not. 2) You shouldn't help me, I've already fixed my problems :) 3) I'm still not buying new equipment specially for Demigod, too :)
Either way, it's clearly a piece of shit. At least we've identified some hardware that will only be trouble with Demigod.
I'd say that given a hard choice between a modem and Demigod, the choice will be "modem". If some shitty network code can't do it on my equipment, then the blame lies on the code, not on equipment. ESPECIALLY given the fact that the same code worked quite decently (if not very fast) before the patch.
Oh jeez. Wha
I think something similar occurs when opening a web page
Yeah, but http is TCP, and Demigod's traffic is all UDP. TCP is *way* more reliable (and slower and have much more overhead).
Some quick steps to do: 1) Exit Demigod; 2) Run it again; 3) Get into a custom game with this "can't connect issue"; 4) Wait a bit to give the game engine a couple of tries; 5) Exit; Find ImpulseReactor.log somewhere in your "users" folder and post it here. Maybe there will be something interesting in logs.
Well, then the initial explanation by Spooky is correct. There're not too many packets, but there are some very short timeframe - that's why they create such a huge spike. Also this could be the cause for "lag spikes" issue described in another topic - ping packets get delayed because of such traffic "bursts". And it seems that some hardware can't handle such amount of UDP traffic - therefore all kinds of problems. PS: Basically, you have
I think that was from before joining a game.
I can't see anything at x-bar - how many time passed since the last D/L spike until the last U/L traffic?
And these HUGE short D/L spikes? Let's see: 1st - check for updates/result; 2nd - login; 3rd - list of custom games (or pantheon stats?); 4th - joining a game. And fourth spike is HUGE.
It could be because of the massive amounts of UDP packets the Stardock server sents to you.
I think that the problem isn't really in packets amount, but relatively short time-frame (ALL the connection data is sent in about 10-20 mseconds, 1 query per player + 1 per game, as seen from my log). SPI firewalls don't like it. Some hardware gets it messed up. The result is all the same though - you just can't connect. PS: I've solved the problem for mys
You may want to read some brainstorming here: http://forums.demigodthegame.com/347837 Although it all depends on your own willingness to play around your modem settings. PS: Of course you won't play on LAN with your 0114 version, since the majority of such games created with pirated/unupdated Demigod. Rollback your own game to release version before trying.
E-Tech ADSL Modem Router
Hmmm, a modem that could go in routing mode? Sorry, didn't read that in the first place. If so, then reset settings and DON'T do any port-forwarding settings. Usually, factory settings for router modems just leave all the traffic alone, you probably don't need any manual port-forwarding at all. PS: Also, if your modem have any built-in firewall - disable it (at least for the tesing session).
Read some recent posts here: http://forums.demigodthegame.com/347837 (edit: wrong link) Basically, you would want to make your router as non-intrusive into traffic as possible. There's usually a "DMZ" option that'll let you do so. It seems that ANY kind of packets routing (including, but not limited to, port forwarding) is acting up on SO many hardware with the latest Demigod patch.
Ok, managed to defeat total lack of connectivity by removing everything related to packets routing from my modem settings. However, lag spikes are at large really. Joining a host (played with the guy in past, having around ~100ms ping) and finding out that you're showing like 1000+ms to him isn't cool and usually ends with the nice solid kick from lobby.
Ok, I've managed to break through. Resetting modem and removing all traces of packet routing did the trick, I was even able to carefully apply some routing back (i.e. like ports for torrent for other computers in my lan). However, other "nice" problems like "desync" window and insanely high ping spikes (see http://forums.demigodthegame.com/352130) are still there.
You might need a new router...
Does it come included with Demiod DVD-box? How about new modem for the players who doesn't have a router but still cannot connect?
I'm starting to feel more and more that dropped connections are dropped on purpose by the firewall when they see something they don't like. That "too many UDP packets at once" issue explains all that. If your modem is in bridge mode, then everything (read: packets) is sorted by OS, and it seems that Windows can handle this. If your modem is in router mode - *some* (there're a lot of ppl who CAN connect) modems is stuck. BUT, it worked pretty decently during 5/11 - 5/14 period. Sure, it was probably slower than now - but I guess "something for everyone" is better than "good for some, nothing to others" attit
Well, after the latest patch, I'm back to being unable to connect to any game - panthenon, custom or skirmish.
Just +1. And also, it could be very possible that this category of "cannot connect to anything" players like us renders pantheon unusable. About in 80% tries I could see at least 1 another stuck in "Waiting to connect to" player, and this means that there's quite a lot of such players - and even one of them will ruin the would-be-game wit
No longer working. It can't get past "Waiting to connect to" stage, even if it shows player names fine. After a bit of waiting - see topic name. PS: For those helping hands out there. Yes, it perfectly worked yesterday. No, I didn't change network/NAT/Firewall/whatever configurations. Yes, I *did* apply a patch, 0114 in that case. Yes, it worked before the latest patch and isn't working after it.
There's only one strategy (that everyone SHOULD follow, not the other way around), actually. "Do not die." Kills brings enormous amounts of gold (and quite a good exp) for killer/supporters. Also, you'll be staying dead while opponents are building their exp/gold/map control. So, you'll be 1) Outleveled; 2) Outfarmed; 3) Deprived of war score; if you'll keep dying. PS: Everything else like "do
You forgot to mention that at least two heroes - Torch and QoT - can drain their mana with REALLY incredible speeds (esp. with favors - -20% cd anyone?). And I found out that HoL on these heroes is the cheapest thing that can end your permanent OOM state. Healing is just a bonus here.
Flags, flags, flags. A lot of them. Capturing a flag brings a lot of exp and early it's even better than staying in the lane (there're too few creeps, they die fast and you're waiting next wave). On the other hand, if you can dominate lanes better than your opponent, it could be wise to lock off-lane flags early. That way you can use your lane superiority to the full extent, and your opponents can't go for the off-lane flag for some cheap exp.
