That's why most "strategy games" today are RTS games and not TBS games, because the "instant gratification generation" doesn't want slow, boring, turn based game-play that requires real thought about where you'll move you're next unit or what kind of attack they'll use. They want to point, click, and win...period.
That describes Starcraft to an amazing degree, which is why it saddens me so much when it gets paraded as an example of a
In any case of a game made for a console as well as the PC, or Heaven forbid, a game made for consoles brought to the PC, 99.9999999 percent of the time does not take into account the flexibility of the PC. They don't even try to take into account the 128 key Keyboard and mouse combo. This and/or tiny maps and options. Irritates me to no end. For example, making me use the arrow keys and enter key to make menu selections when my

It's pretty fun actually, to me at least it feels less like a Total War game and more like a real-time version of Elven Legacy somehow. Probably because when one unit has a tactical advantage over another, victory seems much quicker and decisive than in the TW series. The AI appears to be fairly competent, too, unlike recent TW titles, but I haven't played enough to make a definite judgement on it yet. Still, at the very least it's a change of pace, and it *is* a gorgeous game. If it
I think people (such as the author of the complaint quoted in the OP) confuse 'strategy' with 'tactics.' 'Strategy' inherently requires more than ordering units around, it requires a grander scheme to have a robust production capacity and not stay limited to the units you start with. Tactics are the battles. If you dislike basebuilding, you dislike strategy; if all you want are battles with no economy or bases, you want a tactic

Funny that you'd make this post today, when Impulse is having Achtung Panzer on sale. Go grab it, then try telling me to my face that RTSs without base building are 'strategically crippled'. So-called "base building" is not only a chore, it's cruft held over from the early days of RTSs when they had to do *something* to pretend it was a clash between two armies rather than, at best, a couple squads on each side.

IMNSHO, strong typing is only useful in languages that have either a powerful type system such as Ada or Haskell, or a strong OOP system like C#. C and C-derived languages, however, don't and so I'd rather have a language with dynamic typing such as Python and Lua over them. Why? consider the following example:
void printDate (int day, char *month, int year) { printf ("%d, %s $d\n", day, month, year); } ... printDate (324, "D

FEAR 1 & 2, and of course Battlefield: Bad Company 2 as suggested above. There's also Red Faction: Guerrilla which is the current champ in enviromental destruction, but let's be honest: the game is all about explosives and your big damn hammer, if you use guns in that game you're already doing it wrong.

I hate Lua's implementation of OOP as it's prototype-based (like Javascript) rather than class-based (like every other language on the face of the planet), but other than that it's a pretty nice language, particularly for writing quick scripts. Still, Python is a great language in all aspects and so my vote would go for it over Lua, but my opinion ain't worth that much as I've never written a game mod in my life.

The video is blocked in my country, so whatever point you wanted to make you'll have to do it the old-fashioned way: through text. Ohh, and also, non-Japanese animation isn't anime in the same way that non-British rock/pop isn't britpop, the country of origin is a vital part of the category's definition.

Neither Bulletstorm nor Dragon Age 2 are available here in South America, and I've already preordered Dungeon Defenders ages ago (at least I think so, I wish Impulse had an easy way to keep track of preorders). Still, I've got tons of games I have yet to play, so I shouldn't be preordering anything anyways. Chief among them is The Witcher, in fact, but God knows when I'll have enough free time to dedicate to an RPG of its complexity.

None, God bless Digital Download services. You'll have to take my old, Pentium-era notebooks and my classic camera collection over my cold, dead and exorcised body (because if you don't, I'm coming back from the afterlife just to prevent you from touching them), but as long as I've got my Steam and Impulse logins I don't need no stinking box or DVD to enjoy my favorite games. Hell, many of the older ones have either been released as freeware (OMF:2097, Death Rally) or were like that t

It's one thing to call a game like Maze War obscure, and it's quite another to do so to The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. But I guess in your mind The Beatles were nothing but a bunch of dorks nobody knew about, doing God knows what since clearly Michael Jackson didn't invent Music until 1982. WoW isn't Wolf3D, it isn't Doom, it's freaking Quake III and the tropes it's commonly associated with ("cartoon" graphics very much included) not only existed but were already popular <stron

While in general terms I agree that listening to the Fan-Dumb has been the pitfall of many great and not-so-great forms of entertainment (FFIX and FFXIII, I'm looking at you), I think it hasn't been as bad as you imply with Elemental. Sure, the devs have been playing ping-pong with the balancing decisions so far, but balance is the one area where the community has the final word on a game, for better or worse. When it comes to the actual design of the game however I believe they've showed a l

It's not a rip-off, it's simply a relatively high 'early adopter' fee. It's fairly common in technology, most notably with Windows releases and new Apple hardware. Still sucks, though, as it encourages you not to be too loyal to any one company, otherwise you'll get burned by the first release then get charged again for the second. Good thing Stardock actually does the opposite and treats their early adopters with respect, it's one of the reasons I trust them so much. <p

They changed far too much stuff for me to list here. They're as different from one another as the original SC was to TA, it's just they decided not to change the name this time around. Overall, though, while I think SC:FA is the better game overall, SC2 is still pretty good, even great if you manage to forget it's named "Supreme Commander". Much better than that other game whose name is also shortened to SC2, at least ;) The SP campaign is dissapointing in terms of bo

Of all the LG-manufactured pieces of hardware I've owned, the only one that's died on me was my old CRT monitor, brutally killed by a blackout alongside my TV. Damn power company. About 70% of my optical drives have been LG, the rest being Samsung, and they've all survived until being replaced by a next-gen one, in spite of them being in heavy use for a week or so before sitting unused for months (I use them mostly for backups, which I make roughly twice a year). In fact, I'm currentl

My opinion on it as a whole is directly dependant on what you actually do for a living (videographers need a lot more screens than programmers for instance), but in general... ever heard of SSH? or VNC at least? far cheaper than eBay's monitor section, man, and you'll save a few bucks on furniture while you're at it. And this is a very personal thing, but I think your desktops would look a fair bit less cluttered if you stuck the speakers *behind* the monitors rather than directly in

Well, it's just devs realized the 15-years-old male demographic (ie, the only one that actually cares about such things) isn't as profitable as they thought. Don't worry, once you reach full adulthood you'll finally stop caring about it. Until then, well, I guess there's always moar Counter-Strike.

It's a turn-based strategy game without the words "Sid Meier's" in its title, even if it was perfect in every way and included a free pony on the box it'd still only get a 8.0 at best, and then only if the reviewer in question happened to be partial to ponies. So, unsurprising. Nothing more than yet another game taken by Gamespot to be made an example of how they totally do not inflate scores, honest, just so they still have some credibility left when they g

GalCiv is the deeper one, but Sins being realtime adds some challenges of its own that GalCiv lacks so its up to you, your Elemental experience will allow you to pick up either with relatively little difficulty. Regardless of which one you pick however, make sure you get the other one ASAP later on ;)
