Thanks, Seleuceia. I see how it works now. Giving a currently used number to any other separate unit will remove it from previous units. That's one way of doing it...

I hope I post this question in the correct thread. It is a strategy based request. Just like the game Homeworld of yesteryear, the devs adequately showed us how to assign fleet numbers to groups of vessels with in-game tutorials, (Simply lasso your ships, hold down Ctrl and pick a number from 0-9, easy peasy...) but they neglected to inform how to un-assign fleet numbers from a ship or groups of ships if the need ever arises.
