Try using negative modifiers in research.
The only difference is a twice as large mip map for each mesh's texture, making the texture twice as sharp.

Yep. The point emitter has three states: camera, perpendicular, and parallel. Camera faces the camera. perp faces over one axis. It is good for controlled direction emittances like sparks, missile trails and so on. Paralell is stuck in 3D space but only shows one face. In order to control which direction it emits, change the point emittance direction from '180' to 0.

I think Bailknight did it with Cluster warheads. He at least tried to change the hit effect. The only thing that I can think of is to have a particle effect play in the center of the targeted ship after a missile hits it.

You should make a mod that is made from scratch. Take ideas and implement them, and then post the mod. Try several different combinations of buffs and nerfs and changes. If anything works especially well post the idea and then add it permanently into the mod. If the mod has enough changes and the game is found to be perfectly balanced, maybe Ironclad would take the ideas and make them into a patch.(unlikely I know) I am volunteering for any modding needed within my bounds of expertise

If there are multiple starbases to take care of, the Solanus is AMAZING. It also has an obnoxious range, more health than the Ogrov and multiple targets. Just set up some defense vessels around them. ONE defense vessel can take out a fighter squadron in no time. The Ogrov might have an edge on damage as opposed to the Solanus, but I would much rather have 25 Solanus than 35 Ogrovs. Ogrovs are delicate and slow. Solanus have more health than anything except Aerias in the Advent Frigate
At least make Gauss Rail Gun or Flak Burst a wee bit more effective. (I am aware that there have been over 100 posts on this subject.) Adaptive Forcefield needs a little more of an effect. Have it lower incoming damage and block more phase missiles, and have it lower damage from energy weapons. Would make some sense and would make the Kol more effective against the Advent. Most of my ideas get shot down, but hey, I'm full of them.

I was mentioning a pack of LFs that were eating a group of Solanus that were being used to destroy a starbase. The Radiance stopped a lot of them with animosity and the Solanus were able to take out the starbase.
