Agreed, although I countered this issue by making my sovereign a warlord. Those two sentinels make all the difference in the early game.

Patience is key. Even now, this game is worth waiting for and definitely worth playing right now. 300+ turns on a large map with one crash to date. There is nothing better then summoning yourself an army and being able to actually use it with success!
