Sins of a Solar Empire GOTY edition without Expansions - Worth buying/playing?

Hey guys, have heard about Sins and meant to pick it up one day, then forgot about it until recently when I saw the Game of the Year Edition in the bargin bin when I was buying Elemental. My question: is it worth playing Sins all patched up but without the expansions, or would you guys consider the expansions "critical" to the game because of the added updates/fixes/features?
