Some of the Vasari Rebels tech branch names need some changing to suit them more IMO. How about Oppression --> Cooperation or Collaboration (if possible) and... Manipulation --> Alliance? And maybe change the names of some of the techs in the oppression part like from "enslaved labor" to "joint efforts" or something like that?
This also happens to me, especially when the maps and battles are particularly huge. There's this rather inconvenient way to solving the problem - once the statistics screen pops out, don't go back to the main menu. Alt Tab then open task manager. Find the Sins of a Solar Empire process and End Task it. Restart the game if you want to play again. The game or your saved file won't error, I've been doing this all the time since Sins Vanilla. Hope it works for you.
I'm not a beta tester of the game, but I watch the YouTube videos of the beta. In this video, observe carefully the Titan around 0:16 to 0:28.
