As an additional point of clarification I have the version of the game bought off of Steam and he has the CD copy. Will that pose an issue as well?

I recently decided to get the Trinity version of the original game so I could play with my friend but he only has the default original version of the game with no expansions and we have been having trouble trying to play together. Is it because I have the two expansions and he doesn't that is preventing us from playing together? If so is there a way to fix this besides him paying for the expansions?
