Yeah the setting and atmosphere were pretty good, the game mechanics were ambitious and the problems could have been fixed, ditto the pudding-brained AI that was really the death knell. Near miss - playing later with some of the fan-made mods showed really how close it was to being a very good game. I too hope somebody picks up the setting, it had a lot more personality than the usual bland aliens with arbitrary backstories in most games.

We here at the Excessively Abusive Terran Meta-Economic department were sitting around watching our mighty republic get outproduced by even minor empires, when we asked ourselves the question "Hey, let's try to abuse the trading system". 1. Yes, unfort. you have to build a colonizer ship for each planet. 2. Move your cursor over each planet - you'll see a colonizer. Click on the one you want to land on. Took me a bit to figure that out the first time :) ~SDC~
