Thank you so much for the advice. I ended up spending 2 hours on the phone with a Dell tech who was VERY familiar with this issue. It's a somewhat common problem in Vista, according to him. They have gotten lots of calls about it, and he himself had experienced it more than once on his own computer. End result is, I'm upgrading to Windows 7 with his assist next Saturday. He said he has personally heard of zero problems of this type with Windows 7, and he says all

I haven't been around WC for ages upon ages, but I decided to come back for a visit because I have a HUGE computer problem going on that I thought maybe someone here might have some advice about. And I know this probably should have gone in a different forum, but I have to admit I wanted to put it in a place with more traffic so I had a better chance of somebody seeing it. To make a long story short, my internet connection up and died Monday night and has not been functioning si

This is something that happened in an isolated way over the summer, so it wasn't all that bothersome. But now it seems to have happened on a large scale, so I figured I'd come here to see if anyone could give me an explanation. A bunch of my DesktopX weather widgets have broken all of a sudden. The one I'd been using for about a week (Candy Cane Lane) loaded wrong, with nothing but thunderstorm icons and showing my location as Boston. I cleared the cache, reloaded th

This was not a fun upgrade. I did the upgrade through SDC, and I lost wbconfig. I figured that had to be some kind of bug, so I checked this post and found out I wasn't alone. I opened SDC again and saw that it showed that WB wasn't even installed, so I installed it, then rebooted. When the WB configuration window opened after rebooting, I'd apparently lost all of my skins, only 4 were showing. I was just about beside myself, because I had so many skins, and I didn't want to spend hours re

I'd had a certain amount of reservations about the new Superman movie coming out this summer...I just didn't know how the one with Christopher Reeve could be topped. Well, the new theatrical trailer is out, and all my reservations are gone. If the movie lives up to the trailer, then I think Superman Returns will do for the Superman franchise what Batman Begins did for the Batman franchise...bring it back to life with great honor and love of

Out of the blue, when I booted my computer this morning, I got an error message telling me that a buffer overrun had been detected in desktopx.exe...this buffer overrun had corrupted the program, so Desktop X had to shut down because it was not useable. I decided to uninstall Desktop X, then reinstall it through Stardock Central, I rebooted after installation, and then got the same darn message. My weather widget actually loaded just fine, but when I

OMG, that's is just so frickin' hilarious, yet sad in an odd way. Still hilarious, though. This is the one paragraph that really got me: I am sorry that we had to go through the process and accusations to get the problem resolved. It could

I've had something similar happening on this Dell computer I bought a little over a year ago. The screensaver will only engage if I set the time to 1 minute. Anything else, and it never comes on. Weird little glitch, that's for sure.

I've been a Doctor Who fan for well over 25 years, so of course I was anxiously looking forward to Friday night's Sci Fi Channel premiere of the updated series. And I ended up being somewhat underwhelmed. As a matter of fact, I turned the second episode off halfway through because it just wasn't holding my interest like I hoped it would. I'll probably still end up watching it since there's usually nothing else on on Fridays, but it's not at all goin

I mainly use Firefox, and the site is still very slow at times...I have the Fasterfox extension which tells me load times, and it took 38 seconds just for this thread to finally load.

We've had a lot of celebrity deaths recently, everyone from Don Knotts to Kirby Puckett, but seeing this news when I looked at the CNN website this morning shook me up the most. Dana Reeve, Christopher Reeve's widow, has passed away at the age of 45, due to the lung cancer that she announced she'd been diagnosed with last fall. It seems extraordinarily cru

I began to really worry about my mother's sanity a couple of days ago, when she said she rushed home to see Darth Cheney's interview on the fawning Fox News Channel. I made a big "UGH!" noise and said, "He's so EVIL!" Her response? "I like Dick Cheney! He's not evil, he's just a very private man!" Some day, I'll have to show her some of the s

Well, I've changed my nick recently simply because the one I chose a little over 3 years ago seemed a bit childish seeing as I'll hit the big 30 this year. I felt that f0r3 no longer fit, so I decided to go with Kevin, but someone else has apparently taken Kevin, which I find odd because I've never seem a Kevin but then again I g
