Default ship types

I'm new to the game (love it) but am wondering if there exists a list of the standard ship types and the technologies necessary to acquire them.

Thanks,

Chris

Welcome to the game, and the forums, Chris. I don't recall seeing them all in one place, but if they are, I'm sure someone will come along and let us know. A piece of advice: design your own ships. Not only is this one of the more entertaining facets of the game, it is absolutely essential if you wish to be successful.(I assume you do) When you design a ship yourself, you are able to choose which components to add in order to counter a particular threat. (Or to become that threat yourself) It's not only offense/defense either. You can add sensors so that you can see them before they see you, or to find anomalies and planets to colonize. Add engines to your ship to get to that planet before another civ does. Your greatest strength as a human player is your ability to react relatively quickly to a particular set of circumstances. Designing your own ships is part of this.

Honestly the pre-designed ships included in the game are only useful on the very lowest difficulty settings, if that. You really need more flexibility to compete with the AI, and that means designing your own as the need arises, with whatever technology you have at the time.

In the tech tree as you reasearch a technology that can be used for ship's it will tell you the ship default design that you have partialy unlocked by researching it and the other tech's needed to make the design avalible.

Just to iliterate on what Kyro said, default's suck. There just there as a guideline of what NOT to build, IMHO. They are the express bus to defeat

I'm rapidly finding that out (quick way to defeat). Thanks all for the advice, time to pump up the research dollars...

Just too good to pass up, sorry.

It is not just an incorrect spelling, which should be 'illiterate', but the actual word you probably wanted to use (judging from the context) would be reiterate.

Reiterate means - to state or do over again or repeatedly, sometimes with wearying effect

Illiterate means - 1 : having little or no education; especially : unable to read or write

Moosetek, some people don't have English as their first language. That being said,

Perhaps.

But still, I would think they would rather know the correct usage of those words.

I was not trying to berate Fate.

I have tried to design my own ships, i might be just used to how Master of Orion 2 did it, but i find GalCiv2 ship designing....lacking, you need all 3 defenses to be protected? nah, i would prefer just armour and shields just like any sci-fi movie and show i have seen.

If only i was a good modder, i would mod out the point defenses and make the shields and armour defend against all 3 types of weaponry.

You don't need all 3 defenses to be protected. Any given defense will also protect against other attacks by the value of its square root so if you have a high shield level it will also protect against low level missile and mass driver attacks. Besides, the opponets almost always focus on one weapon technology and you just need to focus on the defensive technology that counters it. If you then go to war against another opponent that uses a different weapon tech you should design new ships with another defensive tech to counter them. If you have ships left with the old defense that you no longer need you can upgrade them with your new designs. Building ships with all three kinds of defenses is not effective militarily nor economically. If one would change the way defenses work you'd remove a big strategic part from the game.
