Sins Beta 1 - Technical Feedback - *Post Here*

This thread is for technical feedback for Sins of a Solar Empire Beta 1. 

Please reply to this post if you'd like to make: a bug report, let us know about a compatibility issue, graphics issues, performance reports, etc. (i.e., technical stuff).

Before making a report, please be aware that the minimum system requirements for Beta 1 are:

  • Windows XP SP2 / Vista
  • 1.8 GHz Processor
  • 512 MB RAM (1 GB RAM for Vista)
  • 128 MB 3D DirectX Video Card
  • DirectX 9.0c

IMPORTANT:  When making a post about a bug, be certain to include - your system specs, a description of the bug you encountered, what you were doing when the bug occurred (how to reproduce it), and if it was reproducible or not.  We won't be able to make changes to the game without detailed information.

If you encounter a crash, please install SmartException from the Free Stuff section of Stardock Central and reproduce it (if possible). Send the generated exception to: sinsbugs(at)stardock.net along with a detailed description as outlined above.

Hmm, update on my last post. Not sure what's going on now. I've been booted out of Sins a couple of times now and when I do I get the same error message as before when I try to start it up again. A reboot does seem to fix the problem tho. Not sure whether it's Sins that's at fault or my system has got a case of the snivvles. I shall investigate further..............

You guys should have got a fleet load of dump files from me tho (sorry about the mess) so hopefully someone will get to the bottom of it.

Hi H5N1 - I'm sure Ironclad's gotten them and is looking into the matter.   Probably going to take some time to track down what's unhappy, however.

ok fellas, found an interesting bug/error. Pirates. The pirate rogue, (based upon the scout frig model and design) was instead using AUTOCANNONS and had the same attack as the guarda flak, and the pirate reaper (based upon the guarda flak frig) was using lasers and had the same attack power as the scout frigate. also noticed that my flak would not attack normal ships after shields were down.

After winning a small game, I was taken to the after-action charts. Everything worked well until I went back to look at a previous chart - then the curves for all the charts disappeared. The data was still there, because the value dialog box was working as I moved the cursor accross the box, but no visual.

This is beta(10)

While loading a saved game, I started fiddling around with the mouse, right clicking and dragging. I heard some acknowledgments of orders (it would say "deploying" and other stuff like that) and when it came out of the loading screen, my fleet was moving to another planet.

Didn't really cause any problems besides the fact that I blindly sent my fleet to a hostile planet but thought you should know about it. Who knows what wacky stuff is possible if you issue orders while the game is only half loaded?

(hey, Yarlen said to do dumb stuff to try and break it so there ya have it )


Edit: more stuff

While dead, I was able to add bounty to another player.


When you have both planet modules and ships selected (such as gauss cannons and some ships) and you issue an order (such as an attack order) it doesn't respond well. Half of the ships seem to ignore you and continue doing whatever they want. I had to select the planet modules, give them the order, then select the ships, and give them the order separately.

What is wrong with this picture?



Game setup was small galaxy, no flagships, locked teams. I set it up to be a 2v2v2v2v2. The Trade Coalition was my ally. All pirate ships were this way.

I can provide the savegame if you think it will help.

I tryed to change the settings to default, and drivers but nothing has changed. Still have the silver asteroids.
Is there a way of turning that off somehow in a text file?

I'm using two G8800GTX cards in SLI and I have the same thing.

I wounder if it has anything to do with the licensed 64bit ATI drivers for the for the Intel system. There are also a few other issues with the V-cards but I have not reported them due to the fact that SLI drivers are squirrelly right now and cant be trusted. So I cant be sure if anything graphically is a game issue or Nvidia related.

Maybe its only the 8800GTX. On my geforce 7800gs+ agp it didnt happen.

Nvidia drivers for ALL 8800 cards have been having weird artifact issues... I am guessing that could be one of them.

I have strange things like split screen (top OK bottom black, violent strobe effects (dangerous to many), tearing, funky shadows and refractions to name a few. I have tracked most of the issues to the "SLI Performance Mode" options for what its worth. However I'm using Vista64 and as I said support for 64 bit is not good (since MS did not force the switch yet again). So I have refrained to reporting things because I dont want to dirty up the data points for the devs. Maybe the devs should start polls on what systems peopel are using and the driver versions -etc... But wait this idea in another version was suggested some time ago - oh well.

That is the point, I dont know if the issues are system related or driver related or game related. All of the problems I have had so far have been driver related after spending some time trouble shooting things. I cant honestly say I have experienced any issues caused by the game.

Shoot I even had issues with Folding at home. When I would open the game. It would always drop to desktop after about two seconds. I figured out it was F@H and turned it off and the drops stopped. So to me F@H and the system had issues not the game. I am even willing to claim the system was truly at fault. But I'm not a programmer so I cant back up my position with detailed facts. I only have my experience and logic. Which is useless for the most for you guys to track down such things.

Does the game have an ending? I just completed conquering all the planets in 3 solar systems. There are no more to conquer. But the game keeps on playing. Is this normal for the beta?

Not for the beta, but the final version will.
