Hello all,
I've played through a few games of Sins and I enjoy it tremendously. A few comments that might help improve game-play.
First off, I have a question about the balance of planets to solar systems. Does the total number set in the custom galaxy screen include asteroids and dead asteroids, or just planets? I played a two star game with twenty planets against one computer opponent(sort of a tutorial final exam) and the star system I started in held 20 different planets if you count asteroids and dead asteroids. It also held my computer opponent...which meant that the other solar system wasn't even worth exploring. I imagine it would be a simple task to more evenly divide the players and planets among the solar systems...but the game doesn't seem to be doing that at this stage.
Second, I think the targeting priority needs to be tweaked a bit. My flak frigates ignore enemy fighters and bombers until they are the only thing left in a star system, this becomes a major headache in large engagements though it is manageable in smaller ones. My fighters act like they are bombers also.
Finally, as a balance issue, I've found that my main advantage over my computer opponents is that I actually build capital ships and they don't. Flak frigates and carriers seem worth researching and using. I use Kodiak's later in the game to defend star systems against pirates instead of cobalts, but only because I have to replace them less often which takes less of my attention away from beating the computer opponents. The command cruiser and robotic cruiser aren't really worth building or researching because I might as well just get another capital ship or carrier. And I only used the LRM frigate once. Its nice for bombarding gauss cannons early, but my bombers do a better and faster job of taking those out anyway.
My firepower completely overwhelms the computer opponents...this makes the later stages of the game a fairly boring exercise of maneuvering my fleet with eight capital ships some flak frigates and some carriers around. I'm occupied while I build up a second or third such force, but more than those are generally unnecessary. I just don't see the point of having those other ship types if they don't bring something necessary to the table. Unless the computer opponents start using capital ships more, they're gonna get overwhelmed every time. Also they need to build less light carriers. They're great for supporting a fleet that can already bust up some ships, but five carriers present very little challenge to even a small fleet that is better balanced.
Despite all of these comments I find the game enjoyable, thank you for putting it out.
