A few of you probably still remember Starlancer, the predecessor to Freelancer, for those that don't it was a pretty good Space Combat game for the Dreamcast and PC in the vein of the Freespace and Wing Commander games.
One of the most interesting things about it was that it eschewed the usual sci-fi fare of having the plucky humans fighting the evil alien menace in favour of the plucky humans fighting the... well plucky humans. But the plucky humans you fought were in fact... "Evil Space Communists". Which was cool because as we all know from games such as Operation Flashpoint and World in Conflict; Communists with heavy Russian accents always make the best enemies in video games.
Anyway it also diverted from the norm in that it took place solely in our solar system with two alliances struggling for control after the Coalition (Read: Evil Space Communists) back stabbed the Alliance (Read: Peace Loving Capitalists with uncanny luck) and broke the deadlock in a century long conflict.
Now if you didn't want to read all my lovely words what I just wrote is summed up nicely by this:
The Game IntroClichés and stereotypes aside it was a very fun game, and with a surprisingly deep and engrossing story, which was helped by some beautifully rendered cut scenes.
Anyway I was wondering whether anyone would be interested in a Mod of this? Or more pertinently whether anyone wants to make a Starlancer mod and has the relevant technical skills to make it a reality, because whilst I can mod the game files in a basic manner my talents lie more in the literary areas.
However I do think it would make a good mod, and certainly an interesting one. For example the Solar System could be huge, if we could graphically scale up the planets and gas giants to a more realistic scale that would allow the addition of moons and asteroids that look a little more to scale. Into that you could add interesting gameplay mechanics, whereby the larger inner planets such as Mars and Earth would have much larger potential for population size and therefore cash output, whilst the smaller ones such as the Moons of Jupiter and Saturn would have smaller potential populations but would conversely be harder to take and easier to defend because of their isolation around the gas giants and the fact that clustered together they would be easier to defend by smaller forces.
If nothing else it would be nice to create a scale model (Or at least a slightly better scale one, not an exact one or anywhere near it because something that large might kill the game engine) of our Solar System as a new map for single or multiplayer games, or for other mods.
Anyway, what does everyone else think?
