I've had this issue come up a couple of times in long singleplayer battles with the AI. What tends to happen is that small frigates will swarm around my capital ships and effectively prevent them from turning or getting into position for a phase jump. This commonly happens when I issue a retreat order or manually tell the fleet to move back to another planet. Last night I was playing against 5 AI's and the orange Vasari AI did the swarm thing against my fleet. My smaller ships were able to escape, but I lost 2 Kol's because they kept colliding with the smaller swarming light frigate ships and were unable to move them out of the way or advance to a jump position. I sat there watching and constantly refreshing their infocards to make sure their abilities weren't getting disabled or any other negative status messages weren't popping up. They were both ok but weaving back and forth or smashing into small frigates while trying to make their turn or advance towards a jump point. There was a third Kol in that group which I thankfully did not lose because my main fleet arrived in time and was successful in making enough damage that it could find a hole and escape.
I haven't been playing multiplayer online so I don't know if this is employed by anyone other than the AI. This swarm problem has happened a couple of times now in big AI fleets. I can understand smaller ships having issues, but a capital ship as big as the Kol shouldn't have any problem shoving those little light Vasari frigates out of the way. It seems like the collision meshes for the ships consist of their bubble shields which can allow a bunch of small frigates to create a virtual wall against any foe, even if it's a big capital ship.
Is there any chance of adding weight to the larger ships so they can shove smaller ones out of the way? I'm not asking for small frigates or cruisers to get this...just the capital ships that are clearly much much bigger. It's kind of annoying to issue a jump order and just watch the ship weave back and forth because it can't figure out how to get through a swarm of light frigates and cannot destroy them fast enough since they're constantly getting healed.
