Defence placement

i was just wondering how people position their defences to get maximum coverage?

Personally,  I just stick everything together, so the hangars and starbase draw the enemy fleet in (to stop the strikecraft) and this by extension brings them into range of the 'turret' defences.

I put mines in front of my defence, in the place the enemy fleet has to go to attack the SB, so at least they have to spend some time mine clearing, or basically go around/ over the orbital body at the centre of the grav well, either this adds time when fighters can attack and my defences are not being attacked.

Anyone do anything else interesting? Have I missed a trick? I'd prefer to here about defence setups that have an effect on humans, because the AI is pretty dumb.

I put mines around the back and side of my planet away from the defenses becasue that is where the siege frigates are going.  Mines are unkind to them.

I also place the trade port in front of my SB to attract the pirates which go strait for it or are chasing the trade ships going to it.  Basically both ideas are taking advantage of the ai's behavior.

I tuck my hangars and shield generator right behind my SB with two repair structures.  It is rare the ai ever amasses a fleet big enough to take this defense out, but they sure do get an "A" for effort.

The ai seems to put it's SBs at the very end of the incomming phase lane surrounded by mines.  I have wondered if this is better than placing the sb in front of the planet?  Unless it is an Orkulus it leaves the planet and other structures to fend form themselves, allowing the eney to destroy the planet and other structures before engaing the SB, especially if the enemy is not using that phase lane to attack with.

If you get the upgrade, the SB will stop you losing the planet. It can be bombed to 0 health, but you cannot lose it until the SB is blown up (Aux govt for TEC, can't remember the name for other races off the top of my head....)

i tend to cluster my SB, hangers and repair stations together between the planet and where i think the enemy will attack.  i also put mines in a huge semicircle band around my SB so no matter where they jump in they have to wade through a minefield. also i put 4 or 5 turrets on the backside of the planet to pick off any siege frigetes.

of course this is for a major defence node when im not gonna have any mobile units to back them up. sometimes its good to sucker a fleet in with "inferior" defenses to suck them close to the grav well then jump youre own fleet in. it depends. but its good to cluster youre defence if its spread out its just gonna get killed bit by bit.

No, the Advent get Enduring Devotion.

Anyway, I put structures close together so that repair bays cover them all. Turrets should be placed in a dense line where you think the enemy will attack. Turrets are weak when spread out.

Do you lose the planetary upgrades though?  If you did I would use the SB slot on something else and just let my bombers and mines take care of the siege frigates.

nope, you don't. the planet is just at 0 along with pop and thus tax income, but you retain ownership and all upgrades. after the fix, this in fact did become quite a useful upgrade or starbases.

What this means is that once the bombing stops and assuming your SB still stands, the population and health will start to increase. So after 5-10 minutes you will have your income back.

One thing I have noticed is that Vassari players will often still use suction on planets with this upgrade as 1) it gives them resources and 2) reduces income but they won't be able to colonise the planet until they kill the SB

you can still loose the planet to culture, even with the upgrade
