Some years back [and even today] people were calling Microsoft the 'Evil Empire', but this behaviour by Apple shows what evil really is. I really wanted to try out a Mac desktop, but the more I hear about its practices, locked in systems and slave labour in China, the less and less I see myself going that way. Then there's my great-niece's experience....
Yeah, my great-niece started university this year and fell in with the yuppy crowd of Apple/Mac fanatics, so [you guessed right] she sold off her Windows based laptop and got herself a Macbook Pro with all the bells and whistles... and an iPad.... and an iPhone, to be one of the 'in crowd' Everything was rosy and her new equipment was the bee's knees.... until one day when [similarly to the OP] her iPhone performed an update that broke all her apps, so she took it to the Apple store get it fixed.
Wasn't she in for a rude awakening! The assistant told her she would have to purchase all new apps to regain her functionality, to which she said "I can't afford that after spending over $4500 on Apple products".... to which she was told "sorry we can't help you." She then said that she wanted the phone backdated to the previous firmware to be able to use her apps,, to which she was told "that will void your warranty." Silly girl got a uni friend to revert back to the previous software, and not long after the phone broke totally, and of course Apple voided the warranty and consigned it to being a rather expensive paper weight.
Not to be deterred, Mak [that's her nick... short for Makaylah] purchased herself another iPhone, and so far so good. However, it's now her iPad that's giving her grief. Some of her apps on that ceased to function recently and she's had some power issues with it, so instead of taking it to uni to use as a study aid, she's having to leave it at home and take the much heavier and cumbersome MacBook Pro. Now that is still working properly and she has had no technical issues with it... however, there are things she did on her Windows machine that she cannot do on the MacBook Pro... because the required programs simply won't install.
So, in light of all that, Apple's generally nasty attitude all 'round, my thoughts of purchasing a Mac have taken a serious nosedive and several steps back. Nope, I think I'll stick to building my own Windows based machines and enjoy an open world of computing that's not tied to proprietary hardware and software that limits my personal wants and needs.
