I have been experiencing the same issue. It's not SP1 however. It's your GFX drivers. Namely the new 174.16 driver set. They're highly unstable in Sins and will cause your computer to hardlock. EDIT: SP1 for Vista has been released btw, it's just not available to all users yet. It can be downloaded from Windows Update with a slight registry modification for example.
Tangent question: A friend of mine told me that you can't colonize worlds inside someone else's culture. Is that true? If so, can I use culture as area-denial, by flooding my enemy's space with my culture and then destroying his colonies?
Yes you can. The enemy can't capture planets if you have strong culture over it.
The following is mostly addressed to Syvere, but it goes for all the anti-option people on this thread. Just to clarify my position here: I am not a twitch gamer. I'm still learning the game, but once I venture out into multiplayer I plan on playing mostly on normal. I do not enjoy fast games myself. I just think the option should be there for people that do. Options are good by definition. I really do not understand the amount of opposition that's building t
This means that once you learn the game and UI, on small maps, you sit there waiting for the game to make your moves.
I'd agree if this were the case. So far in MP there hasn't been a single dull moment in the game especially if you are specifically trying to wrap thing up quickly. (I play all my games in normal speed) Nowadays a in a medium sized map my games usually take 1-3 hours, which I still think is -very- manageable. You can wrap thin
I let loose the "personal attacks" because I honestly thought i'd have an aneurysm if I didn't get it out of my system. You are a perfect example of ignorance, arrogance, and elitism. I figure I might as well stop the logical argument since you clearly don't listen to logic when you don't want to, and i've already made my point. Anybody with any level-headedness or even-handedness or even TOLERANCE agrees with me. Go suck an egg, cod-bucket.

We're not the ones coming to the forums whining and complaining about the game, you are. And by you I mean all who want the higher speed settings. Well no. There are people complaining that it's not slow enough.
True that. I'd edit that part if I could. Though the ones wanting a slower gameplay seem to be playing SP for the most part. And the game speed for single player can be easily
@Syvere: So you're the gaming equivalent of a grumpy old man. Wonderful. I suppose "pyscho niche-gamer forumite" could be interpreted as a personal attack, but it came at the end of a trail of valid points. Your response merely dismissed him as "halokiddie" which is highly unlikely to be true and of questionable relevance. You're a textbook example of the PC gamer who thinks that anyone with different tastes that yourself is a complete and utter moron, despite blatant
Syvere, you started with a slippery slope fallacy and then made an ad hominem attack in retalation for kingberk's completely valid retort. I'm not even going to dignify that with a response.
So you think it's ok for kingberk's to do personal attacks just as long it fits your opinions. Right-o... I've been around the gaming scene for the better part of 20 years, I know what I'm talking about. BioShock, Oblivion and countless of other games are
5.The Dev's have stated they are producing both a "slower" and "faster" option.
Not true. They have only stated they are -considering- this.
Oh boo hoo. You have a chip on your shoulder about normal RTS gamers and you want to show it off by trying to deny them their chance to have fun. The reality is, including a faster option wouldn't effect the "Normal" and "Slow" players at all, it'd just divert some of the "Fast" players t
To me the problem is that, let's say there's a 'DUR DUR' option for uber-fast speed. This gets around, sales skyrocket, and now the game is clogged with these players, to the point where the people of whom the game was intended for are pretty much drowned out by the balance demands of the 'DUR DUR' option crowd. Yes, options are great, but you have to consider what changing the game too much, even gradually, in a certain direction would do.
M

The reality is, including a faster option wouldn't effect the "Normal" and "Slow" players at all, it'd just divert some of the "Fast" players to "Very Fast". Your attitude is completely uncalled for and completely illogical. If IC wants success (and expansions and sequels) they should keep all gamers in mind, and if they can cater to more people
Why doesn't Ironclad just add a "fastest" speed? Seems like that would serve a lot of people with a nominal amount of work. Yep, thats what many people are asking for. Additional "faster" speeds. They are not asking to change how Normal works, or anything else.. So it's difficult to understand why some people are so viciously against it, saying that it will "Change the game and make it
It actually wouldn't take that much at all. All it takes is for each player to save the state of the universe when they exit or hit the save button, which I think it does already. Then it's just a matter of who ever is hosting the game, giving that saved universe to all the players joining so they have the copy that the host wants to use. I can't see how that would be that difficult...
Well to fully implement thi
actually it is a real time strategy - the other RTSs out there are RTT (tactical). Find some mates to play with and save the game to continue on another night.
Yeah, I know hence I said "in a traditional sense" ;)

I have a family that i love and want to spend time with. I dont have 6 hours a night to play. And i aslo like to play with other people. I dont find it fun to play with computers because you can't talk with them. I mean long games are fun but, could they add an option like fastest for
In that case then you should definitely contact sales. All direct orders include a download option and will give the serial in advance (gnerally this means that the box WON'T have a serial in it, since you're already getting one).
Ah, ok. What a hassle. Is there anyway to make them at the sales respond to this asap so that they won't ship copies without keys? I really need those 2 copies to be shrinkwrapped and new (
Did you order them as gifts? If not, you'd end up with all three serials bound to one account anyway, which wouldn't be very helpful. Best contact [email protected] to confirm the situation.
No need, I only need that one serial now to get to play myself. I just wanted a confirmation that I would be getting 3 copies of the boxed version in mail. I ordered them all in one order, so no gifts. :)

Hello, Some of you might have seen my thread a few days ago. Well, anyway I ordered 3 copies of the Collector's Edition (boxed) from StarDock and just got 1 serial. While I don't need the extra serials now, I would like to make sure that you'll be shipping those 3 new copies of the game to me (since the other two are going to relatives later on and I paid for them). I hope someone from Stardock sees this and responds :)

In most games like Sword of the Stars you get to choose your portrait from a large variety (both male and female). Can you do this in Sins? Also are all voices in the game male or do they have optionable female voices as well? One thing I hate about space games in general is overmasculinity. It's more ridiculous than anything else.
