Ok. My motherboard was an Asus A7N8X-X -- onboard sound. I'm deaf. I don't really see a point in investing in a pci based solution. But, when I ran a dxdiag, I got a prompt that I was missing a dll file -- ksuser.dll So I ran a google, got that particular dll and threw it into the systems folder for winxp. I can now start the game, access main menu, etc. Wow. I haven't been able to play it for a few weeks. Wonder how that dll got erased in the first place.

So, when I try to start the game, I get an error message that says, "Audiosystem Init failure: Error initializing output device. Now, my sound works just fine, so I don't understand what's going on here. I've reinstalled the soundcard drivers, deleted the game and redownloaded it. Still getting the issue.
