Basically, the OP is asking asking what sort of stuff should happen to the player, and everyone is giving random experiences from D&D. Quest writing is labor intensive. We're talking about making an interesting quest system, but for the computer instead of the player! To me that seems like working hard instead of working smart. I would expect very little miliage out of this discussion. It's really just noise.
No, the OP is asking what sort of things should happ

One of my favorite D&D characters was from way back, but it was for his ignominious death. The party was just starting out and I had them crawling through a narrow tunnel. My friend, a ranger whose name has been lost to time, was in the lead when they hear a snuffling sound coming towards them. My friend pulls out his long sword, but he's got a horrible attack penalty due to the confined space. The noise gets closer and they see it's a badger, which stops to eye them warily. And t

I'm expecting that raise/lower will go through some serious balancing and tweaking, because right now it's pretty overpowered ;) Why would you ever build a navy/transports? Just build a land bridge and be done with it (I'm guessing ocean currents and their weather and food implications are not modeled). What I think I'd like to see is that shards augment the power of your spells, such as raise/lower land, allowing you to make a bigger impact. So without an earth shard, maybe y

It's so hard to tell how magic will play out right now, since magic is so, so limited. I can only hope, though, that one can't end up in the situation where they've picked an Air-aspected channeler but there's no way to actually get an Air shard due to map gen, thus locking you out of any useful spells. Or, like you, get stuck behind impassable terrain because, as a super-powerful channeler, you can't cross a mountain range ...

I've had those as well, but didn't watch the experience - I thought I was attacking a unit (spider 1) and being attacked by a different spider (spider 2). If you only get XP for the one, though, then perhaps both units initiated an attack on their turn which didn't resolve until the next turn (due to having to move first).
Ok, I got that one ! The first city has an upkeep of 1, the second an upkeep of 2, the third an upkeep of 3. So the total upkeep should be : 1+2+3+4+... But ! 1 city -> 1 upkeep 2 cities --> 2 upkeep 3 cities --> 6 upkeep 4 cities --> 24 upkeep 5 cities --> 120 upkeep. Do you see what happenned ?
I don't see why the spell effects on the cloth map have to be boring (maybe boring when compared to the 3d engine, but not boring on it's own right).
Indeed, rather than a mountain just appearing you could have a graphical 2D animation to impart the violence of the event. What that would look like, I dunno, but if the idea is to keep the minimum specs low on the cloth-map then you could still do somethi

I spawned in a fairly big open area, but it turns out it was entirely locked in by mounts to the north, east and south and the ocean in the west. Unfortunately I crashed, and so don't have a picture. Debug Message: Map Random Seed: 1264554700

I'd say it's expressly intended to be limiting :) My interpretation of your concern is that you fear that there will only be one valid starting strategy - build as many cities as you can. I think Stardock's intention is for their to be multiple starting strategies that work and so spending all of your essence to build cities is only one path. I wouldn't be surprised to find that Essence costs are one of the differentiating characteristics of the faction that you choose. So may
Wait for the beta to start (tomorrow AM0 and your card tobe charged (2-3 hours later hopefully). Get worried after 4pm only.
And that's EST - Stardock's in Michigan, so if the beta's released today and you don't get an email by late afternoon EST then you might want to contact [email protected] with your order #.

I'm pretty sure the single player is a story (campaign). See, for instance, this post [Edit] And I should say that, from other posts by Frogboy, the intention is to have the story w/ random events and a map that is generated each play-through. I might be wrong on the last part, but since I haven't the opportunity to do the searching right now I'll just have to go with my memory :)
Eh seems sorta unfair [e digicons]:|[/e] I'd rather have this option have to be sorta a last ditch kinda thing, so if your economy can support having all that land then you can keep it (not since you have X amount of land your economy WILL fail, thus forcing vasals).
I'm pretty sure that's exactly what Frogboy described, "At some point, it may become advisable to turn some cities into vassals."
I don't think they're going to lock the beta for the rest of the year, are they?
Yes, it will lock until the next beta phase, which is scheduled for some time around January. (At least if it runs like all of their other betas)

I hate to chime in with just a "me too", but, well, me too. I get two " C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs" windows if I use CTRL+ALT+DEL to lock my screen. I'm also annoyed that Impulse is bundled in. I like Impulse at home, but Fences (for me) is filling a very useful niche on a work machine and Impulse doesn't belong here. The fact that I can uninstall Impulse but keep Fences means that Impulse obviously doesn't have</em

The shot you're referencing Maccilia is significantly older than the shot from brad's blog, but still I'd expect that the unit size to scale up/down based on zoom so that you can more easily select them.
