I only feel stupid that I never noticed I could disable that executable within SDC. And let me tell you, it's been bothering me since early last year! I usually spend time looking at all menu options within any program, but that one escaped me. But yes, as a customer, I second kryo's and Voqar's statements. SDC is a harmless program. And it really came in handy for archiving GalCiv2 and DA onto one DVD, so I could easily transfer it to my laptop. I used to manually download

I own Dark Avatar, but my SDC shows my GalCiv2 as being version 1.50.090 and Dark Avatar being 1.50.059. And when I run GalCiv2 (not DA) it shows as being v. 1.5 in the lower-left of the main menu. So I assume 1.5 is the latest for GalCiv2, even if you don't own DA. -HM

Side note - SDC is harmless - there's no reason to not use it. I only wish I knew why it felt the need to run "SDMCP.exe" every time I start my computer. EDIT: Never mind; I figured out how to disable it within SDC. -HM

This drives me crazy. My C drive is only an 8 gig partition, and it just got below 2 yesterday because the My Games folder keeps getting bigger (even though, of course, all my game installs are on other partitions). On top of that my older Win98 PC (hey, it still works!) has less than a gig free on its C drive, and certain things won't install because the stupid install programs want a ton of room free on the C drive to extract themselves. Look, I can't really blame Stardock for not putting links to the lower rated reviews on their GalCiv2 home page. Why would they if they have quite a few glowing reviews to point to instead? Point me to some developer who links to reviews on their home page by saying, "Whelp, here's a review that's not so good; hope it doesn't steer any of you new folks visiting us from buying the game!" Hrm, I wish I had seen this sooner. A GeForce 6600GT probably would've done you really well for ~$93 from Newegg (AGP). I know it's about $10 over, but it would be worth it. It would also be helpful to know what your processor is and how much RAM you have, so we can get an idea of where the bottleneck (if any) might be. -HM

I know I've added fuel to this fire in the past, but I really do wish this game had MP. Last year I convinced a friend of mine, who likes the Meier Civ games, to buy it, but he's never gotten into it. I can't help but think that if I could play co-op MP with him over the 'net (he lives a couple of hours away), he'd get into it. How could you not have fun ganging up on the other races with a real-life buddy? -HM

That's my advice too: small map, a difficulty less than normal, one or two other opponents. And follow Brad's Beginner's Strategy Guide , which will help you understand all the menu choices, and guide you through your first few turns. -HM

Great work! I do get an error when I try to use it with Dark Avatar though. It tells me: Galactopedia could not read an XML data file. Is there really a $10.00 rebate with the Gold Edition in stores? Is it confirmed that you can't just buy the expansion at stores, just online? Yes there is a $10 rebate in the Gold Edition box. And correct: you cannot buy just the expansion in stores. The only way to get just the expansion is to buy it directly from Stardock. -HM

The instruction manual isn't available on-line (the above html document is an overview of the game, and not the original GalCiv2 manual), but there are tons of resources at your disposal. A good place to start is Brad's beginner strat guide: Beginner Guide It explains every major screen in the game and makes recommendations as to what you should be doing in the first few turns of a typical game. -HM

I never figured out why my office printer wouldn't crunch the file. I sucked it up and printed the manual, albeit slowly, on my home printer. At least it worked. For the record, it appears that Adobe Reader 7 makes much smaller spool files than Reader 8. Go figure. On a completely side note, it didn't seem that the new manual explained anywhere how you can focus attention on research, industry, or military output by clicking on one of the three appropriate spots on the top o

Try playing against only one or two opponents on an easier difficulty. Then, pick what way you plan to win. Then you'll have a method and road map so you can prioritize the things to do to win in this fashion. Some additional information...I updated to Adobe 8 and attempted to print just page 1. When it was spooling out to the printer, the file size, according to the printer status window, kept creeping up until it was past 100 MB. And it still wasn't done sending to the printer. This is undoubtedly why the thing never prints for me - the printer is taking too long to crunch something of that size. -HM

I am also having some weird problems. At home to my Xerox Phaser 6120, it was printing one page at a time really slow. So I took the file to my office, and it drove the printer (a hefty Canon iR6000) nuts, freezing it until I rebooted the printer. I'm using Adobe 6. -HM
