Jodonnell, the thing is, if you're buying ships that cost more, like say, a heavy cruiser, which is nearly the cost of the tech upgrade, then the number of ships required drops a bit. Plus, with getting a free capital ship, pretty much everyone is going to have a capital ship or 2 before reaching 48 LRM's. The weapons tech affects the capital ship and you get additional free damage. If you're forced to buy some specialty ships that don't have quite as high DPS per credit value of a LR

Hunting, you should read the whole thing before you comment.
Lets say you could buy 2 ships for the cost of 1 tech, then it wouldn't pay off until 22 or 23 ships.
A direct quote out of my post. It really depends on what ships you are buying. The tech boost also effects your Capital ship dps as well as most if not all of the other ships you build. If you're buying something close to what a cruiser costs, its nearly the same. Really what Jodonnell is sh

Jodonnell, your reasoning is correct, but your math is off I believe. With a 5% increase (which is pretty standard across the board for tech bonuses), the break even point is 20, not 50. I'll illustrate. Lets say you have a ship rated at 20 DPS like the siege frigates. A 5% increase in damage gives each ship 1 extra DPS upping the DPS to 21 per frigate. 20 Frigates doing 20 damage = 400 damage per second 20 Frigates doing 21 damage = 420 damage per second 2

I like some of the suggestions Smacksim. I'll definitely ally with the AI. I thought about just having the original colony for precise timing, but the thing is, the timing of upgrades isn't going to be exact. That was sort of the point of getting the extra cash from scuttling. Having money earlier will allow me to either improve the population on my first colonies, or to build more extractors sooner so that it pays off more. If having more money allows for quicker upgrades of the 2nd and 3r

Playing a long game on a bigger map is absolutely possible if you do it with some buddies. Play for 4 hours one night, come back and finish it off the next weekend or whatever. Plus there's always the option of going really epic, controlling multiple large fleets with Cap ships if you play 1 player and just team up multiple AI's against you. On larger maps, the extra logistics slots isn't as much of an issue since you have many planets, scuttling the Capital shipyard is something you

I guess the question wasn't where to put the 2nd Cap Shipyard, just purely cost over time. You could even rebuild the 2nd shipyard in your home system, if the economy boost is worth it, which it may or may not be. There is definitely a strategic advantage of rebuilding the 2nd shipyard a couple jumps out which that alone might be worth tearing the old one down in favor for extra slots. I'll have the answer from a purely economical stand point when I have time next weekend :(

The economy boost from scuttling doesn't have to be that great, it just has to make up for the 1000 credits minus the recovered resources by the time you would normally have gotten your second capital ship up and running. I'm not giving specifics, because the costs and economies are slightly different for each race. It may even turn out that the difference is close enough so that it might benefit TEC in scuttling, but it may be better for Advent to leave it constructed. I'm going to t

Its hard to say really without running a few simulations because its hard to quantify the effect of having that extra money early on would do for your economy 10-15 minutes down the road. Infact, the best way to test it would also to start a custom random map, with no pirates, and 1 AI that was the Fortify type so you wouldn't have to worry about it. And then, as soon as the game starts, Save the game, so that the resource distribution is the same for both scenarios. It would only tak

I would tend to agree with you. However, how long does it take to get your second capital ship up and running? 10 minutes? It costs 3000 credits plus metal and crystal to build that second capital ship. Now, if you took the money from scuttling the factory and invested it in your economy, it pays back, like intrest in a bank account. After 10 minutes, the credits from scuttling the capital ship may have gotten your economy up and running and may be worth 5000 credits at the 10 minute mark,

I fully understand the concept of FF and reducing the number of enemy ships regenerating shields and hull, reducing the enemy DPS, and all of the various benefits of Focus Firing on one target at a time. But how about this. You have 5-10 squadrons of fighters flying around. Your fleet is Focused on an enemy Capital Ship. With fighters doing 25% damage to Caps and 200% or whatever to light armored targets, would you be better off having these units not FF'd on the Cap and instead atta

The Phase Jump inhibitor/Interdictor ship should be a Capital ship with few other abilities other than slowing down the enemy fleet from leaving. This puts a pretty significant penalty for the obvious tactical bonuses it brings to the table. It may not even be worth building for a significant portion of the game until one side has a clear advantage and the game is reduced to chasing down enemy fleets after the game has really been decided. This has the benefit of speeding up the game and shou

Thanks for the info. How long does the effect last? It sounds like one might be better off stockpiling up some resources to Queue up a bunch of upgrades before the bonus wears off. Is there a visible timer on the individual planet? Anyway, I appreciate the info. I'm still a noob to this particular game and school is coming down hard so I no longer have the time to play test everything in depth the way I'd like. Infact I sent my gaming computer to my brothers place to keep the grade

I have a question regarding the Advent Mothership and how the colonize ability and the game mechanics related to it. Lets say I jump into a system kill the 2-3 pirates and colonize the planet. That planet then gets the 20% reduction in upgrade costs. Then I jump into another system, wipe out a larger pirate force and my Mothership levels up and the cost reduction increases to 40%. I then colonize the 2nd planet. Does the first planet now get the 40% bonus or only t
